You should only format when you want to erase all data from card or camera memory.
If your photo's were held on the camera's built in memory then the chances are it's gone for good. If you have an external card that you store your photo's (SD, Memory stick etc...) then you may possibly be able to get them back providing you haven't overwritten the data. Try one of these programs, most are shareware but will give you a limited trial. If you can find one, use a freeware program, which is usually free for life.

Hope this helps

What does it mean to format pictures? I didnt mean to format them and now all of my pictures are gone.

You aren\'t actually formatting pictures - you are formatting the media the pictures are on.
If you selected yes - your pictures are indeed gone.
There are a few options for retrieval, but they can get costly.
Technically - they are still there - as long as another file hasn\'t been written on the device with the same name.
Refrain from taking pictures until you decide what you are going to do.

Please help, i have lost a lot of pictures from my camera and i have a horrible feeling i pressed the format button without realising what id done. Are all my pictures lost?

Unfortunately, if you formatted the card, yes they are gone. The memory is flash memory, and reformatting erases all information on the card. You might try taking the card out and downloading to your your computer, but it sounds like they won't be there. Always be careful, once you format a card there is no turning back.

I have a samsung digimax v5-5mega pixels. I have been trying to change the time because we have gone off daylight savings. Now on the screen I have come up with it says format set:ok what does this mean...

Hi,
Since you are adjusting time so camera asking about time format like 12 hours (am-pm) or 24 hours format.
Adjust time format as you desire and your stored pictures are safe in memory.
Hope this info will help you.
Thanks.

Lost pictures after pressing yes on format option

There still may be hope, depending on whether your camera conducted a low-level format or not. Please see this post for several free recovery software that you can download. You'll need to use a card reader with these programs though: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html

Can't playback pictures

Try formatting the memory card in your camera. Search the camera's menus to find the option that lets you do a "Full" or "Low Level" format, and NOT a "quick" format.
