Question about Celestron NexStar 8i (600 x 203mm) Telescope

1 Answer

Need info about my used celestron

I got a used celestron telescope at auction. It is about 8" W X 15 & 1/2" L
with a byers worm gear drive. I have no idea what I have. The only name on it is Celestron W Byers worm gear drive. I have no lenses for this. What kind and how many lenses do I need? What should they cost? There is a plug in for a 110 volt electrical wire, but no wire. What is that for? Is their a way to tell how old it is? Can I get a manual on it? I can't find anyone local who can help me. I live in Sacramento, CA.

Please help me discover what I have and what I can do with it.

Thanks, Bob

The DEC Slow Motion Cable Inoperative in both directions

Have you tightened down the clutches? This is a simple mechanism that turns a small gear when you turn the knobs.

If the gears are broken you will need to buy a new mount from Celestron:

Reset the hand controller and reload the firmware. You will need a special cable available from Celestron to load the firmware. The software is available for free on the Celestron web site.

Need the spare parts catalogue for a Celestron Powerseeker 60AZ telescope

By spare parts what do you mean? An eyepiece, a diagonal? a finderscope?

or is something broken like the front lens?

Anyway-- you can contact Celestron at this web site:
http://www.celestron.com/

and eyepieces, finderscopes, diagonals etc etc-- can be purchased from many different on-line retailers. Here are two:

The clutch is not engaging in RA. Maybe the gears are not actually meshing together? A loose worm gear?

You can open it up and look and see if anything obvious is loose. Otherwise it's a trip back to Celestron.

Hand controller not working

You have broken something inside the hand controller-- the computer is in the hand controller NOT in the telescope. Contact Celestron for a replacement hand controller or advice.
