How to remove the scvhost.exe Virus.

Svchost.exe is the name of a generic host process for services that run from dynamic link libraries (DLLs). A variety of worm malware programs spread a similarly named file <b>Scvhost.exe </b>via Yahoo! Messenger that blocks the Task Manager and Registry Editor, as well as use of the command prompt.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Warning</u></b><br /> Manual removal of Scvhost.exe may be very difficult as the removal process requires knowledge of the Operating System's command prompt and Registry Editor. If not performed properly, your computer system might experience permanent damage. Consequently, manual removal might be best for experienced users. Less experienced users might want to consider using an automatic spyware removal application, such as that offered by Trend Micro. This worm duplicates itself to different locations of shared folders. The duplicated program uses a folder icon that has an .exe file extension. DO NOT double click on any of these folders.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Follow these step by step instructions to remove the scvhost.exe virus.</u></b><br /> <b></b> <br /> <b><u>Step 1 (Turning off System Restore)</u></b><br /> This is so that if you ever need to use System Restore after you have removed the virus, it doesn't restore the virus aswell.<br /> <br /> If the operating system of the infected computer is either Windows Me or Windows XP, turn off System Restore while this fix is being implemented. To turn off System Restore within Windows Me, click <b>Start &gt; Settings &gt; Control Panel</b>. Double-click <b>System</b>. Select F<b>ile System</b> from the Performance tab. Left click the <b>Troubleshooting</b> tab and check the <b>Disable System Restore</b> box. Click <b>OK</b>. <br />To turn off System Restore within Windows XP, log in as Administrator and click <b>Start</b>. Right click <b>My Computer</b>" and select <b>Properties</b> from the shortcut menu. Check the <b>Turn off System Restore</b> option for each drive on the System Restore tab. Left click <b>Apply</b> and <b>Yes</b> to confirm when prompted. Click <b>OK</b>.<br /> <b></b> <br /> <b><u>Step 2 (Run in safe mode)</u></b><br /> Restart your computer in Safe Mode and log in as Administrator. Press <b>F8</b> after the first beep occurs during start up, before the display of the Microsoft Windows logo. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode from the selection menu.<br /> <b></b> <br /> <b><u>Step 3 (Accessing Command prompt)</u></b><br /> Access the command prompt. First, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove all the programs you don't use. Then go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Microsoft's website can scan your computer for viruses and optimize performance. The process can take a while so be patient.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries.

Sounds like a driver or application problem you have. As you get this when you connect to the internet, sounds like your web browser. Try reinstalling it

Antivirus 2009

I see these every day, note: also fixes AV 2008 and many others.

This Malware is known as "Rogue anti-virus" software.

This program will remove it: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5360&file=10&evp=2e0d43eb67e1e71c0b31e62c003599c0
the website that has it also has a really good antispyware program called malwarebytes

www.malwarebytes.org

once you run a full scan in this program run this program:
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
it's another free antispyware. these are both professional grade removal software for free. I remove this stuff about 3 times a day. It seems this outbreak is the largest I've ever seen.

If you want a good protection suite that will keep it out buy a copy of NOD32 (www.nod32-av.com) another you may not have heard of, it will block this and many others before it even gets on your computer.

Help and support center

Girish,

Open the taskmanager and click the processes tab and look for these processes and end them if they are running.

  • helpsvc.exe
  • helphost.exe
  • helpctr.exe

  • Close your taskmanager and go to start, run and type CMD you will now have the command box open you will need to type each of these lines and hit enter after.

    net stop helpsvc
    cd /d %windir%\pchealth\helpctr
    rd packagestore /s /q
    rd installedskus /s /q
    cd binaries
    start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install
    start /w helpsvc /register

    The line "start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install
" is what reinstalls the help and support service and may take a little while to run.

Credit for this fix goes to http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm

    Desktop Background

It seems you have a virus problem
if you have spysheriff do the following:

1.Open task manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, and click on the "Processes" tab. Look for Spysheriff there and kill the process if you see it. If you see a process named "winstall" (winstall.exe) then delete this one also.
2.In the control panel goto "Add/ Remove Programs" and remove the "SpySheriff" program. If it says that it cannot uninstall, then you still have it running. It will uninstall once it's not running.
3.Your desktop background will not be restored by that uninstall. Go into the registry by starting RegEdit.exe from the start button.
    4.Look for this key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop
It will have about 6 values stored that disable certain things. Delete this whole branch ActiveDesktop - the system will work with default values afterwards.
Also delete this branch in your registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
5.Look in your root directory for a file named winstall.exe.
This file is scheduled to execute each time you boot and it will re-install Spysheriff.
    Delete that file.
