Has anyone tried the M-Audio Audio Buddy preamp. It looks allright and is very cheap. (Always on the look for a bargain) Any similar products out there. Also does it connect via USB, or does just output a line level signal?
It arrived and is smaller than I imagined. You're right, when I plugged in a mate's condensor, it didn't seem to behave quite right, but it was a pretty high end mic and you just wouldn't plug it into a cheap preamp. With my Shure 57's and 58's it sounded pretty darn good and gives a respectable amount of boost to noise ratio. Never had any problems with clipping. I must say it's not bad. I use it to record a guitar and mic into the Delta 410 and for that it's good value. Four stars I think.

The worst problem with the "Audio Buddy" is that its phantom powering is completely non-standard. It will not properly power any microphone that requires standard 48 Volt phantom powering; the open-circuit voltage is only about 30 VDC. Also it has quite a low input overload point by today's standards (around -17 dBu), and the "clip" LED is driven from the output stage, so input-stage overload doesn't trigger any warning.
Outputs are on 1/4" phone jacks at consumer levels (-10 dBV).
The same company makes a much better product called the DMP3.
