Find and clean all filters,if an air compressor is available take it apart what you can and see if you can get to the motor and blow it out and check for restrictions in hoses, motor has overload protection and dirt will make it overheat and shut off when it cools down then it works again and or check electrical cords and sawitches

Hi Dora,
If your machine is shutting off in use, it may be because you have it set too low for the carpet you're trying to clean. Raising it one level higher should resolve this issue.
However, if the machine continues to shut off, I'd encourage you to contact us directly so we can run through some troubleshooting with you to ensure everything is correct with your machine. Please call us free on 1-866-693-9766, or email us at askdysonUS@dyson.com for assistance.

The machine runs for brief periods, then shuts itself off. If it is allowed to sit for several minutes, it runs again, then shuts itself off.

the motor is heating up to much and the cut out switch is kicking in. You need to check the the motor filter, and worse case you may need to new motor..

DOES A DYSON HAVE AN AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF VALVE

The motor has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated and caught fire). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, the moment it is switched on, it just trips again.
It cannot be reset manually.

The primary cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Dont be fooled by Dyson's "lifetime filters". They need to be regularly cleaned and replaced when necessary.

Replacement motors are available on eBay for about £25, however replacing one requires good DIY skills and tools.

Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com and see if you feel you can tackle it yourself. If not, take it to a repair shop or call the Dyson helpline.

We have a dyson root cyclone and it shuts off after a about 5 minutes of running. Then after about 10 minutes it will run again.

Your description is typical of a machine that's overheating. This is almost always caused by a blockage, as restricted airflow can't keep the motor cool and the automatic cut-out shuts the machine off. It re-sets itself when it's cooled a bit. Check your operator manual for how to clear blockages, and also check that your filters are clean.

My vacuum is constantly shutting itself off. When

It sounds like you have a blockage somewhere and the air is not passing over the motor to keep it cool. There is usually a thermostat mounted either on or near the motor. The blockage can be anywhere from the elbow ( the swivel part of your carpet sweeper if you have a canister vac) up thru the hose.If you have a canister vac, use a broom handle to push through the hose to clear the blockage. DO NOT ! use a coat hanger or anything that will cut or tare the hose. There are electrical wires in it that have 120 volts and causes quite a shock !
.
If you have an upright vac, start with the duct hose that comes from the part with the brush up to the hose and on to the main canister of the vac
If this does not work, take your vac to a reputable vac shop for repair. Hope this helps,
Joe
