Question about Frigidaire Washing Machines

Washer wont spin or drain

Machine has new timer and good pump. I tested the pump by connecting power directly to it and it drains fine. It fills and washes(agitates) fine but goes dead at the drain and spin cycle in any selection. No humming or timer noise at all. I also tested the lid safety switch and it is functioning fine, it interupts the wash(agitate) correctly. Is the motor on this model reverse for the spin cycle and if so could the motor not functioning in spin mode cause the pump not to work?

The pump works fine under remote power. I filled and drained it several times by attaching power directly to the pump. I am wondering if the spin cycle directly affects or disables the pump cycle if the spin rotation of the motor is failing?

  • Breez360 Feb 07, 2009

Is there any way to test the motors spin cycle. It works quite well on agitate. I heard that some motors reverse rotation for the spin cycle and that they may work one direction but not the other, is there any truth here.

  • Breez360 Feb 07, 2009

I also heard that there are motor protection circuits on some models. If this particular circuit existed and failed would it disable the timer for these cycles to protect the motors against fire?

Washer will not cycle

The cycle doesn't advance When the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • It may be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinse water. See There's no cold water.

Nmy drain pump hums but does not pump

Top-load washing machine motors can be started in either direction. This is done by reversing the current flow through the start winding. In one direction, the machine agitates the load; in the other direction, it spins the tub and pumps water out.

I assume the tub is not spinning. If that is so, I would suspect you have a bad timer contact for the spin/drain connection to the start winding and starter capacitor. The winding and capacitor presumably are good since the washer agitates normally.

Some timers can be serviced by cleaning the contacts in question. However, if the contact metal is severely pitted and burned, you should replace the unit.

Kenmore topload washing machine that wont switch to drain

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.#######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Then, see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

Normally, this would appear to be a Lid Switch or Neutral Drain problem BUT since it is re-filling , it sounds like a Timer problem.

See the Service Manual for how to test / replace the timer.

My whirlpool ultimate care series washer does not drain and won't spin. what seems to be the problem?

Hi.

It is a drain problem. The machine timer won't advance to spin until it detects that drain is complete. For this reason the machine is also not spinning.

Check lid switch first, this is testted with a multimeter.
Ensure that the drain hose at the back is not clogged or kinked.
Access the drain pump and undo the hose attached to the pump, see if there is any blockage in there.
The pump can be fully tested by a technician energizing it directly.
If the drain system is fine check the pressure switch that detects when the drain is complete, this should not be the case.
If all the rest is OK, replace the control board.

You can find parts and diagrams for most models here.

Regards.

My whirlpool washer will not drain or spin, but it will fill and wash

This sounds like you are having a problem with the motor not changing direction. The pump for draining is on the front of the motor and runs even when agitating, just it runs backwards therefore keeping the water in the machine. When the motor changes direction, the pump starts taking water out of the tub and at the same time the transmission changes state from agitate to spin.

This could be a bad motor, a bad timer (not connecting the proper wires to reverse motor direction) or even a connection problem with the wiring harness, though the former two are more likely.

Hope this helps

HELP!! Washer machine wont work. Doesnt drain or spin. Clicks to drain and spin but nothing happens, the timer still counts down as if everything is fine.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

If the machine starts, fills and goes through its' agitate cycle fine, the problem is likely not in the motor or transmission.

This type of washer uses a reversible motor. When turning one way, the machine agitates the clothes.

When the timer gets to the spin cycle, the motor reverses, drives the pump (directly from the motor) for a period of time and then goes into spin cycle.

This appears then that is is either the connection to the motor itself or the timer.

The timer is driven by a separate motor on the control panel so if the contacts for the spin cycle are worn, the timer will move but the motor won't turn on.

It fills up..washes..but wont drain or spin out..

I had the same problem. Checked the pump and it ran fine. Took off the door locking mechanism and put 120 ohms into the wax motor part and it tested fine too. I read about problems with that wax motor so I replaced the complete door switch today for $71.00 and the washer runs perfectly now. If it won't spin or even fully drain I suggest replacing the door switch.

No spin - agitate

Hi,

You just do this

  • Test the lid switch
  • Inspect the motor coupler
  • Inspect the drover belt (belt drive only)
  • Inspect under the washer for soot (clutch)
  • Test the motor
  • Inspect the pulley
  • Test the transmission
  • Inspect the Agitator
  • Inspect the pump coupling
  • Test the Water switch level
Good luck !!!
