Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

GE side by side does not defrost.

I have been trying to solve this problem for weeks. What starts the defrost cylce on the fridge? Is it simply a timed event that is adjusted by door openings etc. Heater is good, thermistor tests good, high level thermostat shows continuity. Presently, I have a peak reading meter across the output of the relay on the main board and its been two days and I am yet to see that the defrost has been called for. How often should it defrost in the worst case? I'c concluding either the logic is fried or the relay contact is burned.

    Hi,

There will be a thermistor strapped to the evaporator coils - have you checked this one?

Very often it is just poor contacts on this.

The value from this is compared to a variable pot on the board.

It will defrost when this one gets too cold - ie iced up.

Try jumping the contacts together and see if it pushes it into a defrost cycle. if it does - replace thermistor.

They seem to drift out of limit rather than give up completely. Worth replacing with new anyway to rule out problems there - at least compare resistance when at the same temp between old and new.

If the heater is good, replace thermistor and that's all

Fridge works for about 3 weeks then freezer freezes up and fridge stops working i unplug it for 24 hours and it works for another 3 weeks same story??? what do i dooo? it is a ge side by side newer...

If there is no cooling at all , before we go further we must confirm the first step of confirming the compressor and gas pressure. So shut off the fridge and leave it off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts check if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

I am going to paste part of your text and then reply:

Your text:

Repairman came back and replaced a small round part at the top of the evaporator (resistor??) <
{ That was the termostat}

I just read that the problem could be the defrost thermostat..

He already replaced it.

I hate to say it but is sounds like your in repairman hades.

So far I see 1. a new mother board, 2. new defrost thermostat and 3. new defrost heater element. (other than wiring that is everything in the circuit)

Either one of the 3 NEW parts is bad or...there is a partially broken wire in the circuit.

Hopefully this helps you understand. ( I know it does not fix your uint)

Thanks for using FixYa.

Kelly

P.s your words again:

one would expect this to be remedied.
You got that right!

Freezer & fridge warms up on average every 6-8 weeks. Remedy turn off and leave 24 plus hours with doors open. On turning on the fridge and freezer cool down again to operating temperature....

Good day,
That's too long a period, for a normal. defrost system failure.
You'll have to wait until it quits, then remove the rear panel and look for ice (not frost) building up somewhere in the freezer compartment.
I have solved similar problems on this model, by replacing the defrost thermostat with a GE 60 degree thermostat, and a WR9X330 GE 6 hour defrost timer to get this model to defrost completely.

It's also possible that the refrigerant charge is slightly low, causing the defrost thermostat not to reach a cold enough temperature to perform a good defrost cycle. (building ice over a long period of time).

Make sure Freon 12 was used when replacing the compressor.
Some substitutes caused the evaporator coil to act as if it was
slightly low on charge.

GE Model # DSS25PFMD WW, lights and fan are working not cooling

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

GE side by side fridge TFX22JR not staying cold

You need to unplug the unit and check continuity with a meter across the defrost heater/s. If they are open, that's your problem. The defrost termination thermostat HAS to be below 20 degrees (varies model to model) to close. If at room temp it will read open. Doubtful it is your defrost timer.

Intermittent Warming on GE side by side

The most common cause of this with a GE fridge is the defrost heating element is burned out.
Empty the freezer, take out the shelves and remove the back wall. You will see the heater at the bottom of the evaporator coil. It is a glass tube with a heating element inside it. Some models have two heaters, some have one. If either one looks black inside the glass it is probably burned out. You can check them with an ohm meter. If you don't have a meter, take the heater to an appliance parts dealer and they will check it for you. If yours has two heaters, they must be replaced as a set.
If the heater is not your problem, post the complete model number from the fridge and I will try to walk you through the defrost system checks.
