I have a Director projector with a volume slider in it. I tested it on about 5 different PC configurations a G4, PowerMac 7300 and 3 tan G3's (2, 333 towers and a desktop). It works fine on every system except the G3's, which crash when you click on the slider. Hard crashes, I actually have to yank the plug to restart. What could be causing this? Are the original G3's just really crappy I mean crash prone machines? In school we had a G3 lab, all tan towers, and they used to crash constantly, even right after they were reinitialized. I've even noticed a lot of software manufacturers that note tons of bugs specific to the old G3's, with no problems listed for other Macs.
I just tested a new burn of the disk. I noticed that the problem only happens on screens that have audio playing. I tested it with OS Base plus modem and internet access and it still crashed. I also tested it with OS 8.5 Base and it crashed. Isn't Maxpower an extension for a processor upgrade card. If so, it is not the problem. None of the machines in school had upgrades and they all crashed. The system above didn't have Voxware or Conflict Catcher, so I doubt that is the conflict. Besides my old 7300 had Conflict Catcher installed and the disk didn't crash that machine. Here is a system report for the machine I just tested it on, in case you need it.

Chris,
Looking over your profile (I'm posting this reply to newsgroup...didn't see anything particularly top secret in here...forgive me if this impression is incorrect) I see several things that tell me we haven't ruled out a software conflict in the systems you're using. Not saying there are no flaws in the beige G3's, but we haven't eliminated other causes yet.
Before I get into trying to sleuth out possible causes of your volume control problem, let me suggest this relatively simple troubleshooting approach:
1) Use "Extensions Manger" control panel to switch the configuration to "MacOS 8.6 ALL", reboot and see if the problem appears. If doing this turns off an essential system library or extension, create a duplicate set based on "MacOS 8.6 ALL" and turn on the bare minimum extensions to get Director to run.
2a) If the problem does NOT appear, then the computer itself is not to blame, it is caused by a conflict between third party (non-Apple) software and either MacOS or another third party product. Your next step would be to figure out WHICH product (or products) were interacting to cause the crash. More on this later.
2b) If the problem still appears, we may be dealing with something inherent in the beige G3 design, but we should then check to see if there is a firmware update that may actually address this particular problem. If you reach this point, let me know and we'll continue the trouble-shooting process.
3) Now back to the troubleshooting process from 2a above. Here's what we do next if turning off the third party extensions "fixes" the problem (at this point the computer can't talk to the network and many other bells and whistles I saw in the system profile are not available...and we want to add those features back in without adding the source of the conflict.
The first thing that caught my eye was the presence of a control panel for an accelerator (MaxPower PRO). That particular type of software is tricky to write, and can cause EXACTLY the kind of trouble you've described, IF not used correctly. Do you in fact have an accelerator installed? If not, leave that control panel turned off. Try turning all the other extensions and control panels except this one back on and repeat the test. Does the problem still appear?
If yes, then our accelerator control panel is NOT the culprit. If the problem does NOT appear, then we have found the source of our problem.
The next thing I saw that might affect sound is "Voxware Sound Component v1.5"...try turning everything but that on. Does the problem appear?
I notice you have "Conflict Catcher". Make sure that's the latest version. If I recall correctly you can have it systematically perform the process I am describing here (turn everything off, reboot, turn one thing on, reboot, turn another thing on, reboot...until we crash or hang). Come to think of it that's primarily for conflicts that cause a crash during the boot process. You may have to do this manually.
Well that's enough for now. I'm including your profile in case someone more knowledgeble about some of these extensions (you have MANY third party extensions) spots something they know causes problems.
If turning all extensions off did not fix the problem, we will instead look into the firmware as a possible source of the problem (see if there is a known bug fix that would eliminate your troubles).
Regards,
Jay

Okay, I'm intrigued. I've never had any problem with the beige G3 desktop models I've used on campus at CU Boulder when I boot from my own JAZ drive (currently running 8.6).
I used to work full time as a Mac consultant and have written some Mac software, and I'd like to be sure you aren't dealing with something that may be solvable by changing settings.
Would you humor me and use "Apple System Profiler" (under your Apple Menu) to generate a text report on your least favorite system's configuration? You'll find "New Report" under the file menu. Check all the boxes, when the report window appears click on "text" and save to a file. Just email it to me as an attachment (some newsservers object to binaries being posted here).
I will study your configuration and if I find anything suspicious (or come up with any bright ideas) I'll report back here (and Cc the post to you by email).

3 of the G3's were running 8.6 the other I'm not sure about. 2 of them had about 256MB, 1 had between 64 and 96, and the 3rd I don't know. My 7300 had 8.6 too though with no problems, and it tests ok on G4's and I think a 7200 was the other machine. A friend of mine has a G3 and says it crashes a lot when adjusting the volumes on CD-ROMs and even on QuickTime. The one company I remember is DigiDesign. I don't think they stated the exact errors, just that they had problems with the beige machine, that they didn't have on others. This was a while ago, I think before the G4. As far as my own experiences. They crash constantly. When copying, pasting, saving, opening, closing, launching, quitting, breathing on them too heavilly! We had these problems with every machine in that lab, even right after reinitiallizing and installing. They had about 256MB running 8.5. They have 8.6 now and someone was telling me they still crash all the time.

Hmmm...we're missing some critical information here. Which version of MacOS do you have installed on your G3's, which version of Director, how much memory?
And I've never heard any reports of "tons of bugs" pertaining to the G3 model and am curious as your experiences. Can you cite a few specific publishers and the specific complaints they had about the G3? I wonder if these might be problems with older versions of software not written to Inside Macintosh guidelines finally breaking.
Although I'm emailing a copy of this to you directly please be sure and post your response to newsgroup so everyone can benefit from your experiences!
