The subwoofer was recalled, check the Onkyo website for information. It was a no hassle repair--they will ship you the box and mailing labels. Mine was working properly, but I sent it in for the recall anyway and had it back within 2 weeks.
That being said, when the subwoofer doesn't think it needs to work, like during prolonged dialog without music, it will shut itself off.
Yeah I'm having a similar issue. Front speakers and center speaker working fine but rear speakers are very quiet and the subwoofer isn't working at all. Everything is connected correctly as well if you figure something out let me know.
Yes all speaker must be connected in order for them to work properly. Also note that the audio that you are playing through it must be dolby digital 5.1 or higher or DTS. If you are simply watching a tv program most of them will not be in surround sound as well as music discs.
The next time it happens, try "thumping" the low speaker instead of the floor, it's probably a connection problem inside. I would need a lot more info about the system to even guess about a better diagnosis.
I could either be the sub or the main unit. The main unit actually sends a signal to the sub to turn it on so if that circuit is bad in the main unit the sub is never going to come on. I've also seen bad cables (You'd be amazed at how stubborn people can be when din connectors don't cooperate).
