Question about Brother MFC-8220 Fax
I assume you're getting this error when sending a fax?
Check original is not a paper jam error. This can happen in the winter due to bad noise on the phone lines. When you send a fax, you can get this result from the receiving machine due to noise. The receiving unit will transmit the error back to the sending unit.
The unit is basically asking you to check the quality of the original document. 90% of the time, there is no problem and the receiving unit actually got a good copy. However, sometimes due to noise on the line the receiving unit will get a poor copy of the fax. In this case the fax should be resent. Of course, since there is no way for you to determine how good the copy is at the receiving unit, in most instances you will have to resend the fax to make sure it goes though.
If, however, you are getting this message while copying (very unlikely) you can do a simple test of the document scanner that should reassure you that there is no serious fault, or pinpoint the actual fault.
Press the following key sequence within 2 seconds: MENU, *, 2, 8, 6, 4. If your unit has a FUNCTION key, use it in place of the MENU key. This should take you to maintenance mode. The display should say MAINTENANCE and all the lights should be flashing. If not, try unplugging the unit, press and hold either the MENU key or the FUNCTION key (depending on which your unit has) and plug the machine back in. This will also take you to maintenance mode.
Now, just press 5 5. This is the scanner area setting command, and if there is any problem with your scanner it will show up here as an error. If there is no fault with the scanner, the unit should return to maintenance mode in a moment. Once done, press 9 9 to exit maintemance mode.
If you are constantly having this error, get a phone repairman in to test your fax line.
