WDElements External Hard Drive -- Can't Boot w/o disconnecting it

I just purchased a Western Digital External Hard Drive and it seems to be working well so far (fingers crossed) with one exception. I have to unplug it each time I reboot. Otherwise, my bootup screen hangs and I have to do a manual shutdown, unplug the USB, and then reboot.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem.

Thanks in advance for any tips I could try.

I did try that last night and the problem STILL persists. I'm afraid there's little help out there but I thought I'd give this forum a try. I've already gotten two responses which is fabulous!

    Thanks, though, for the suggestion.

Your computer is trying to boot from the drive. Go into your system BIOS and you should find a menu called "Boot Options" or something similar. Once there, deselect "USB Boot" from the list.

Peace.

Using Western Digital Hard Drive as External Hard Drive Problems

OK! First of all try to disconnect all usb's from neighbouring usb ports as they might be using up too much current resulting in your HD not having enough power to be powered up properly! Also, try to use a different usb port.

If all these fail, please use a voltmeter (if any available...) to check if your devices actually function...

Hope this helps! If not, please report back!

How do i format a wdelements to fat32 with vista to run on ps3

As I don't use Vista I'm going to assume the procedure is the same or similar to XP.

Click My Computer, right click on the drive, select format from the box.

You should then be able to select fat32..

Or
Go to control panel/admin tools
computer mgmt
storage
disk drives

and do it from there.

Purchased an external hard drive for backup. When

When you first turn your computer on, during the first few seconds the screen should give you information about what is happening, AND it should tell you to press the delete key in order to get to the bios settings. Do that (press the key several times to make sure you get there). Once you get to the bios settings find the ones that control the boot disc (usually you will see 1st boot and 2nd boot, and each will allow several possibilities, including floppy boot, if you have one, as well as cd or dvd boot, etc.) Make sure your hard disk is selected as your first boot choice, then save the selection and reboot.
I think this will work for you.

No power on WDelements WD5000

It's not a new hard drive casing that you need, rr_atl, it's a replacement power supply. Western Digital is well know for selling very poorly manufactured power supplies with this hard drive series. The problem you described is a bad power brick.

You need to go into the BIOS of your computer and change the boot order of your computer.  Your computer must be set to boot from your main hard drive only.

Booting Problems When Western Dig. USB Hard drive is Connected

Your laptop will be set to "boot from USB first" in the BIOS. Go into the BIOS (F2, F10 or DEL key as stated on startup) and look for the boot order options.
Change it to boot from the internal hard disk first and all will be sorted.

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.

These drives are too complicated and they die like crazy.
It sounds like it's fairly new so you shouldn't have problems with RMA.
You are lucky you didn't have any valuable data on it...
