Canon pixma mp 780 gives wrong cartridge message and won't print

My 3 year old mp780 worked fine until about a month ago. I changed a cartridge and it started showing "wrong cartridge" message. I've done everything I can think of from leaving it unplugged for 24 hours, etc. It did print a couple times but then the error message came back. My computer tech thinks it is because I am not using canon original cartridges, but I have been using these same cartridges from 123 inkjet for the last 3 years and they have always worked until now. The tech also said maybe to get a new printer head and see if that fixed the problem. I haven't found a replacement for less than $68.00 and I'm hesitant to change it for that price. I may be better off to just get a new printer and throw this one out. Give me your input.

Remove the cartridge. With a cotton swab (Q-tip) and some isopropol alcohol, clean the contact points on the cartridge and where they connect in the unit (ensure unit is unplugged while doing this). Allow to air dry for 30 mins, then power up unit, insert the cartridge as usual.

If problem persists, try a different cartridge,or if you still have the cartridge you most recently replaced, install it to see if error occurs.

It may just be that cartridge is bad.

Worst case try a canon cartridge (even a empty one) if problem persists, consider a new unit.

Thanks for using Fix Ya.

Hi there
Firstly clean the cartridge heads with kitchen roll to mop up any ink, then reinstall the cartridges and printer software, realign the cartridges, use the canon utilities to clean the heads again and print a test page, if all goes well then job done.
If you still get the same problem after this then you would be better off buying a new printer.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Are you sure you have the correct information listed? Canon doesn't have a model 780 listed anywhere on their site.

If you can get a printhead for $68, that's a lot better than $350 for a new printer.

This error message is definately because of weak or faulty print head.replace it or replacing the whole printer is not a bad option as heads r bit costilier.

Won't print black ink text; looks like faint watermark print; ran all maintenance check several times (nozzle checks, etc)

Remove the black cartridge and soak it with an alcohol free window cleaner soaked paper towel let it sit on the towel for a good thirty minutes then wipe clean and put back in printer run nozzle check if necessary.

It is probably one of the cartridges. Usually, when the message "wrong cartridge" appears, the cartridge is faulty.

Canon Pixma MP780 "Wrong Cartridge" Error Message

I have two Pixma 780's. After getting the "wrong cartridge" error one day when I turned it on, (I knew it was the right cartridge) I tried switching ink tanks, and the print head cartridge several times between the two printers. the problem followed the black print head cartridge, so I am guessing I need a new one. From that experience, I would recomend swithing the print cartridge if you get this error. Does anyone know how to do a reset on this machine? A Canon tech told me once, but I lost the info.

Canon Pixma MP 780

This may seem to be a stupid question but, is it the right cartridge?

Is it a genuine Canon cartridge or an aftermarket replacement that "suits" your printer? If the latter, try getting a genuine Canon cartridge and install that and see if you get the same error message.

If you still get the same message, take it to a repairer and get them to check it out for you.

Good luck.
