Question about Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator

I just fixed my calculator so it converts fractions into decimals but i am having a different problem. The answer contains an E in it and idk if its because i was trying to fix the previous problem or what?

When the calculator answers for ex: 345E15 it just means 345 * 10^15 calculators use this notation because they dont have enough space to picture the result, or maybe wile you were changing the mode you put it in scientific or in engenier insted of in normal

Set the Real/Complex mode to COMPLEX. (rectangular coordinates). See the screen captures that follow.

The calculator has two Input/Output modes: MathIO and LineIO.

LineIO

LineIO is the old way of entering numbers in calculators and results are always displayed as decimal numbers. Some calculators have a fraction feature and would convert a fraction to a decimal number and back.

MathIO

In MathIO you enter expressions as you would by hand or as you see them written in textbooks.

In this mode, results are by default displayed as fraction or fractions/ radicals.

Conversion

To convert the fraction/radical to decimals you just press the [SD] key. If you press again you cycle through all the available display formats.

So you can (if you want) use the MathIO to manipulate expressions and convert only the last result to decimal. By the way, fractions and radicals are generally more accurate than their decimal representations.

SetUP

If however seeing fractions and radicals is too painful, just set the LineIO as your default mode. To do so press [SHIFT][MODE] to open (SETUP), then select [2:LineIO]

If result displayed is to be converted, press the S-D key. This will toggle display from decimal to fraction and from fraction to decimal.

To force a result to be in decimal format press SHIFT = instead of just =.

To configure calculator to display only decimals, press the SHIFT MODE key sequence to enter SETUP and seledct 2:LineIO.

For converting answers in decimal to fraction or fraction to decimal there is a S<->D key above delete key.If the answers is in fractional form press this key and it will be converted to decimal form.

If you enter an improper fraction or a mixed fraction with the the [a b/c] key it will be displayed as a fraction. This result being displayed you can press the [F-D] key to convert the fraction to decimal. If you do nothing else and you press the [F-D] key again, the original fraction will be restored.

However, it seems that you cannot enter an arbitrary decimal number and convert it to a fraction. The [F-D] key seems to work one way : from a fraction to a decimal number. You will only recover a fraction if the original number was a fraction.

You can convert between Standard Form (with fractions and pi) or
Decimal form by using the "S<->D" button. Use Mode 1 if you
mostly prefer fraction answers and you can use the SD button to convert
to decimal or use Mode 2 if you mostly prefer decimal answers and use
the SD button to see the fraction.

I hope this helps and good luck!

You can always convert a fraction to a decimal. The reverse may not
always be possible. Look at the example on the screen capture.

You may be lucky and recover a fraction you have just converted into decimal format, but you cannot just write 0.333333333333 and expect the calculator to convert it to 1/3: The true fraction 1/3 has an infinite number of 3's after the decimal mark.

To change from Fraction display to Decimal display on the Casio fx-300ES (and probably other calculators)

1) Press the "SHIFT" button

2) Press the "MODE/SETUP" button

3) Press the "2" button

This Changes it to LINEIO (Decimal)

Doing all of the above but pressing the "1" button instead of the "2" puts it back into MATHIO mode (Fraction)

Hope this Helps

(SHIFT)(MODE/SETUP)(2) to change to decimal

I think the F-D function only works one direction from fraction to
decimal. Decimal to fraction is a non trivial calculation that
can have multiple answers so doesn't lend itself to a calculator
feature.
