Dead of MS Smartphone is near ... because of...

By 2Pansy - usenet poster

I thought that HTC Magician (O2 Xda II Mini alias T-Mobile MDA Compact, ...)
will be for a long time the only mini Pocket PC phone, but not:

BenQ P50 is coming and it has faster processor than magician, also weighs
150 gram, but has Wi-Fi and built-in keyboard.

It's like having treo650 but with wi-fi and with windows mobile!

wow.

I am afraid that entrance of new (small) Pocket PC phones may kill MS
Smartphones particularly because BenQ P50 costs just the same as MS
Smartphone and is thus dirty cheap considering Wi-fi and keyboard.

what do you think? will mini-pocket pc phones, CHEAP ONE, kill MS
Smartphone?

Well I rang Orange for the M2000 but they are out of stock until the
January. I think I might get it off them for either free or ??100 at the
most.

"si" < ...

by now the problem was size: pocket pc phones were big.

but HTC Magician and BenQ P50 weigh only 150 gram and are very portable. (my
favorite: P50!!!)

you said this, but did you put it to practice? have you got pocket pc phone
already?

I think there is a market for two different devices: Phones, and PDAs (with
or without phone functions).

I'm sure that in the long run, MS will combine the Smartphone and Pocket PC
O/Ss, but I don't see that as being a problem as long as when running on a
phone-size device, the device is still primary a phone (as MS Smartphone is
at the moment).

I use a iPaq quite a bit when around home or the office, but it's too big
for me to carry around as a phone. It's size is a drawback if I want to use
it as a phone, but ideal for what I use it for... General PDA "stuff".

My C500 however, goes everywhere with me. It's small enough to carry around
everywhere, and I know I can pick up my email while on the road (as well as
make phone calls obviously). However it's screen is too small to use as a
PDA, although I find it very handy for checking
addresses/emails/appointments etc.

Because both devices sync with Exchange server, I know each device is always
up-to-date with emails/appointments etc. If someone in my office adds a new
appointment in my calendar, then I'll see it no matter where I am, on either
device. For me *that's* the important thing.

Although I expect the O/S will become one at some point, I'll still want two
different devices for difference uses. The only way that will change is
when it will be possible to get a "roll-out", or "projection" screen on a
phone, hence giving a phone a larger screen. At that point I'll be happy to
just use one device - However, by then I expect we'll have phones running
fully blown XP for Tablets (or whatever the next version will be). That
would be nice as I could get rid of the laptop as well :-)

A.

I did say this exact same thing about a month ago.

Everyone will want pocket PC because of the vast array of (free) software
already out for it.

I don't think so.

I never got used to using the touch screen for dialing. Maybe if Sony ever
releases that prototype LCD with tactile feedback they were hollering about
a few years back.
