Question about Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 for PC

Photoshop Elements 7 on Vista-64 freezes when saving files

It doesn't always freeze, but does every 3rd or 4th attempt. After that the computer must be shut down via power switch. It worked fine for the first two weeks or so.
Many thanks!

Looks like I had too long a subject line and some info was cut off.
Photoshop Elements 7 freezes when saving files.
This is on a new Toshiba laptop with 3GB RAM and Vista-64 bit.

  • namegreb Feb 07, 2009

    Thanks for your suggestion.

It looks like deleting the preferences file might work. For other folks who might need this info, try this:

    1. Got C:\users\{username}\AppData\roaming\adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0

    2. In the 7.0 folder, find and rename the editor folder to "editor-old"

I'll follow up when we determine if this actually continues to solve the problem.

Make sure that your Photoshop software was made to work with your computer's operating system, because if it is not, it will give you a whole bunch of problems. Also, check how much hard drive space you have available because if you do not have enough, it will not allow you to save and it will freeze.

Ok, you may need to update your vista to sp2.also, i would check my mem. you will need at least 1 gig of untouched free mem to run this correctly.oh, make sure you clean your registry before you reinstall this software. sometimes registry errors can cause these lock up along with old versions and lagging memory. Hope that helps ya:)

A couple more generic troubleshooting steps to try:

- Reinstall in “simplified mode” with all background services, including anti-virus, disabled. (Seehttp://www.adobe.com/go/kb402603.)

- Run PSE as administrator (different than running in an account with administrator privileges or with UAC turned off).

- Try disconnecting all your USB devices except mouse and keyboard, rebooting, and seeing if you still get the problem. If you don’t, then reconnect the devices one by one until the problem occurs. That will at least identify the device causing the problem.

Note that Adobe officially doesn’t support PSE 6 on Vista 64:

http://www.adobe.com/go/kb403403

I haven’t seen any mention yet of support for PSE 7 on Vista 64. Their policy is more than a little deceptive, since the marketing literature and system requirements make no mention of excluding Vista 64. The PSE 6 Readme and a tech note refer to PSE 6 on Vista 64 without mentioning lack of support.

Have you tried to make sure that all the updates are updated? Also Vista and Photoshop 7 do not get along that well so they can be kind of funny. I would try to make sure everything is updated first

You need to upgrade your RAM memory.

In all of these, in the step that has you uninstall and reinstall in simplified mode, do this as well:
    1. After uninstalling, remove any remaining traces of PSE manually, (http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/phot... )

    2. When using “msconfig” to disable background services for running in simplified mode, be sure to disable any Microsoft Intellipoint services (Intellipoint is software for Microsoft pointing devices that isn’t essential, and it often conflicts with PSE).

    3. Then after installing in simplified mode, try running PSE in simplified mode after reinstalling. There might be a conflict with a third-party device driver or service.

If you call Adobe’s technical support and they can’t quickly identify your problem, they will most likely take you through these same steps. Note that they have a reputation for sometimes being way too quick to suggest reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows.

Upgrades are usually troublesome as they leave bits of the old OS in odd places. It is best to do a clean install.
Choose your OS, either Vista or Win7. XP will not work!
Always download the latest drivers for the OS you are using from hp.com or it will keep hanging and be unreliable.
Hope this helps.

Every time I try to open the program, I'm getting this: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (Editor) has stopped working. Windows can check online for solution to the problem. Check online for a solution and...

Do Solution 1 first, then try Solution 2. Proceed to Solution 3 only if you wish to operate your device directly from within Photoshop or Photoshop Elements Editor.
Solution 1: Disable the TWAIN plug-in. Photoshop and Photoshop Elements Editor do not load plug-ins whose file name begins with a tilde (~). Rename the TWAIN plug-in to prevent Photoshop and Photoshop Elements Editor from loading it.
To disable the TWAIN plug-in:
  1. Do one of the following:
    • If you are using a 32-bit edition of Windows:
      Photoshop CS4: Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
      Photoshop CS5: Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
Photoshop Elements 6.0 Editor: Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
    • If you are using a 64-bit edition of Windows:
      Photoshop CS4: Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
      Photoshop CS5: Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
Photoshop Elements 6.0 Editor: Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
Note: If you do not know which edition of Windows you are using, see Determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit edition of Windows (kb407673).
  2. Rename Twain_32.8BA to ~Twain_32.8BA. (You may not see the filename extension .8BA.)
When the TWAIN plug-in is disabled, you cannot operate your device by choosing File > Import > [Device name] in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
If you do not wish to operate your device directly from within Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, then you can use other software -- such as the software that came with the device, the Windows Scanner And Camera Wizard, or Windows Photo Gallery -- to operate the device and save image files from the device. (For instructions, see the documentation for the other software.) Then you can open those files in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
Solution 2: Disable older scanner files in Windows. If Solution 1 does not solve the problem, open the C:/WINDOWS/Twain_32 folder and move all files in that folder except the wiatwain.ds file to another location. Older scanning files in this folder can cause problems with more recent drivers and applications.
If you would like to operate your device directly from within Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, then proceed to Solution 3.
Solution 3: Troubleshoot installed drivers and re-enable the TWAIN plug-in. If you use a scanner, all-in-one printer, or another TWAIN-compatible device on your system, then the device's driver may be out-of-date. Download the latest version of the driver for your device from the manufacturer's website. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the driver. (If you have more than one TWAIN-compatible device, then download and install the latest driver for each device.)
After you have installed the latest driver for each device, re-enable the TWAIN plug-in and restart Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
To re-enable the TWAIN plug-in:
  2. Rename ~Twain_32.8BA to Twain_32.8BA. (You may not see the file name extension .8BA.)
If Photoshop or Photoshop Elements successfully starts with the TWAIN plug-in enabled, then you can operate your device by choosing File > Import > [Device name].
If Photoshop or Photoshop Elements fails to start, then the driver for one or more TWAIN-compatible devices that you no longer have or no longer use may be causing the problem. (A driver will remain on the computer even after you disconnect a device.) Identify each device that you do not use, and then follow the manufacturer's instructions to completely remove each device's driver.
After you remove the driver for each device that you do not use, restart Photoshop.
If Photoshop or Photoshop Elements still fails to start, then the driver for one or more of the devices that you currently use is incompatible with the TWAIN plug-in. In that case, disable the TWAIN plug-in (see Solution 1: Disable the TWAIN plug-in) and leave it disabled. (You may also wish to periodically check the device manufacturer's website for driver updates. If an updated driver becomes available, then repeat this solution.)

Can't install photoshop elements 7 on my vaio (vista)

If you had a prior version of Elements on your computer, make sure you have uninstalled it via Add/Remove Programs. This process doesn't remove everything, however. You also have to remove the database cache file manually. To do this, navigate to c:\Program files\Common files\Adobe\Adobe pcd\cache\ and delete the file named "cache.db" by dragging it to the recycle bin. After I did this, my install went fine.

I already found a solution. I am not home at the money so I cannot tell you exactly what I did, but there was something under the system portion of Vista that I had to add PrintMaster to so that it would work. I am able to now use the program.
Thanks!
