The screen shows no icons and the controllers turn off
There are no icons on the screen and although the controllers initialise they turn off again almost immediately. Have tried two different controllers. The screen just shows the moving wavy line. Have tried the PS3 on two different TV's and the same happens on both.

This problem is because your PS3 software has become corrupt. The following steps will cure the problem but you will lose saved games and all other data. Your trophies will not be affected as these are stored by the Playstation Network.
Step 1. Turn your PS3 onto standby (Red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it, beep 5 seconds later then beep once more 5 seconds later and then turn back to standby. Release the power button.
Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep twice quickly. Let go of the power button as soon as you hear these two beeps.
Step 4. The PS3 will start up asking you to plug in a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Do this and it will boot into the recovery menu.
Step 5. Choose option 5 (Restore PS3 system). This will re-install the PS3 software and restart the console.
Step 6. When the PS3 restarts you will be asked to enter the time and date and other information. When the setup is complete your PS3 will boot into the home menu normally.
This is the XMB its the main menu of the system. Games will be located under the Controller Icon. To play games insert a UMD, or if a game is downloaded and saved on the memory card, go through the icons under Controller icon. A disk icon will appear and show a preview screen to the game, press X to start the game.
Switch the PS3 off (Red Light). Hold your finger on the power button
until the PS3 switches on and off. Take your finger off and hold it in
again. It will come on. Hold it until you hear a double beep and take
it off immediately. You will then be taken into a recovery menu. It
will ask you to connect your controller via USB. Choose option 3 -
Restore File System (Do not try any other option as it will erase some
or all data on your HDD). It should work after this.

Also make sure that all your leads are pushed in fully and you have nothing within range that can distort your picture. (for example if my son uses his remote control car my screen goes flickered, if my neighbour turns on their mower same garbled screen again)

It will ask you to enter another password. Do that twice. Allow the movie to start. When it gets going pause the movie, Press the Select button on your controller again. The DVD menu pops up. highlight SETUP. When that setup screen appears go to the 3rd icon from the left. Press X. Then highlight Parental Code. Set the parental lockout level to OFF.
