Hi, this is hard with out the disc for xp, or the one that goes with the system. if you have the key code, and you can get a xp disc, you would be able to clean install of xp, but you would lose the extras and other software that came with the computer, most of those you can download. do not use a dell,hp,or any other brands install disc! unless yours is a direct match. you may try and find an oem xp disc(this is what i would do) and clean install.hope this helps, glen

Got the computer second hand the previous owner used a dell recovery disk how can I use the gateway recovery disks to get it running?

You insert the disks with the computer powered off. Then power the computer on and it should boot into the recovery and offer you options. Choose the option to reset the computer to how it was when it was new. It will take a while to wipe the hard drive completely. Then it will install the Windows version originally installed. It may reboot up to twice while doing that - you shouldn't have to do anything. It will also install any software utilities which Gateway put on the computer (some of which may be bloatware which encourages you to subscribe to services - consider uninstalling some of that and downloading your own free ones). That's it - really simple! Let us know how you get on please.

Reformat partition hard drive

To return your HD to the factory settings do a full system recovery using the recovery disks (CD or DVDs) you made when you first had the computer. This will return the whole computer to its as-shipped state: you will lose all your data and any software that you have installed. This will retain/re-install the original partition structure on your hard disk. To do this process you may also use the recovery partition on the hard disk.

To completely reformat the hard disk, in which case you will lose everything on it
press the start button at the bottom left of screen,
R-click on computer, and select manage. The computer management window will open. From the left pane click on disk management under 'storage'. A new pane will open, with information on the different disks in your computer. Select the disk on which the partition to be formatted is located. R-click on the partition to be formatted, and choose format, and ten work through the format wizard. (see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-format-hard-disk-partition#create-format-hard-disk-partition=windows-7)
When you R-click on the partition other options will appear will appear as well as format, choose the appropriate option to create a new partition, merge, etc, By successively working your working your way through the partitions you may format/merge some while retaining others.

Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
a) The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.
b) The hard disk is damaged.
c) Sector 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed master boot record (MBR).
Note: Some third-party programs or disk corruption can damage an MBR.
d) An incompatible partition is marked as Active.
e) A partition that contains the MBR is no longer active.
Method 1
I would suggest that you update the basic input/output system (BIOS) to the latest version by contacting the motherboard or computer manufacturer and check if it works.
Important: Modifying BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Method 2
If the above step fails then I would suggest that you perform startup repair on the computer and check if it works.

Lost Windows password:

  • Login as Administrator. Try with no password (load safe mode if you don't see Administrator). Press F8 during boot to access Safe Mode. XP only.
  • Login as other user (if other user is available) and manage users. Must be an administrator.
  • Reformat computer.
  • Use 3rd party software to remove password. Like http://www.top-password.com/reset-windows-password.html
  • Free software option would be Hirens Boot CD. This one is command prompt only. http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ Must follow instructions exactly.

Do you have the original installation disk that came with the computer? You can try to boot from that CD and do a repair installation. The Cyclic Redundance Check (CRC) error refers to the media the computer is trying to access (either the CD or the hard drive). Try booting into Safe Mode (reboot and press F8 repeatedly until you get a boot menu). From Safe Mode run a checkdisk (chkdsk from command line) on the hard drive to find and repair any found disk issues.

Can u help me?

You may insert the Windows XP CD and reinstall Windows XP just to be sure. Follow the instructions on your screen and format the C Drive. Make sure you install all the required drivers to make everything work.

If you are optimistic follow the following instructions:
This will help you attempt to repair your system (and not via the Recovery Console).
Insert the Windows XP CD and follow the instructions on your screen.
Then after a certain point, you will be asked for three options --
1. Install Windows
2. Repair via Recovery Console
3. Some other option I don't recall.

Select the first option.
Then again, follow the instructions on your screen and again the computer will ask you three options.
This time select the second one -- Attempt to repair the computer (Press R).

This should start the automated repair process. This has been observed to work most of the time, but in a few rare cases it doesn't work. So I suggest you try it if you have the patience. ;-)

Good Luck.
