Re: my powershot G9 built in flash is not working
There is a switch on the hot shoe to detect the external flash. When you use an external flash, the switch will be pressed down, then the unit will bypass the internal flash and won’t let it fire. If the little switch gets stuck somehow, you won’t get your internal flash on. Check this switch on the hot shoe (either on the left side or the right side), blow some compressed air then plug/unplug an external flash several times. Hopefully you can get it back

Does the zoom switch feel loose? There was a problem with G7 zoom switches - a spring in the switch used to break sometimes. Maybe it's the same problem, although I have never seen a G9 with that problem. Anyways, you will have to give it to a camera technician, unless you have experience in camera repairs. G9 is not a complicated camera, but it's not hard to damage it without the experience. To access the top cover from the bottom side, half of the camera has to be disassembled.
More than likely, your camera has a short from some loose screws inside. A lot of these G9's get this problem. You get it fixed, it's $89 all in at: www.CamerasAndParts.com The great thing with that site is they just service the Canon Powershots exclusively and they totally know these cameras. They include the parts, the labor, the service for the camera, the no power correction included, and even the shipping back. It costs $89 for everything with them and they do excellent work on the Powershots. Good luck with it. If you need help with a Powershot, they're the place for one of these models!
The best place for service for the Powershots is: www.camerasandparts.com They only specialize in service and repairs for the Powershots and they know their stuff, they're amazing if you need service for one of these models. They don't have any service package for a powershot for over $100 including the repair, plus the service for the camera, and even the shipping back. Try them, they do amazing work and that's where most people head for service for the Powershots, good luck
Assuming there's not really a fault on the camera. Have you got it dialed into a pre-set photo option ? This may negate the flash. Suggest going through the settings menu, putting everything to auto and trying again.
Have you tried blowing air in the memory card part of the camera? Might be dirty! If that doesn't work, look for a repair shop, a popular one for the Canon Powershot cameras is camerasandparts.com since they only work on the powershots. They tend to be the place if you need help with one of these. They don't charge much at all and they do all the service on the camera too. Go to that site and you'll see they have your specific problem posted right there for your G9. Good luck with it.
Might need to have the flash replaced or it could be the hot shoe detection switch in the camera, it might think you are using an external flash when you are not. Try going to this site: www.camerasandparts.com. They only service powershots and they'll help you if you have a problem with one of these. If you need to have it serviced, they are terrific and about half the price of many shops. Hope that helps get you in the right direction anyway.
