I have the Same problem. My Lengend CX is consitently 6-10 meters off to the East. My Cache is usually 6-Meter or so to the west of where I am standing even with accuracy of 2m. My Nuvi 250W is more accurate. Must be newer technologies. I have just started putting in mental offsets.

Depends on the number of satellites each GPS is viewing at the time so if you are holding the device your body will be shielding a number of satellites from the device and this may be different depending which direction you are looking in. The other thing is that 10m/40ft is about the best accuracy you can get from a standard GPS. If you want better accuracy you need a surveying GPS with a Differential GPS receiver

Both of them are displaying the location within the expected accuracy of the GPS system when using non-survey quality instruments (10m/40ft).

If you were actually holding one GPS above the other then the lower GPS will not be seeing as many satellites as the upper one due to shielding of the antenna. If they were side by side it would avoid that and make a fairer comparison.

Is exactly the same data loaded into both GPS units?

If after eliminating any differences between the units and one unit still shows a poorer performance then it suggests that there is a possible fault with that unit. However, the retailer / manufacturer is unlikely to admit to the unit being faulty if it's showing an error of less than 10m.

Let me know if you find there is a consistent difference between the units. I have aquired a GPS12, GPS38, Etrex and an eMap over the years but I have never had two units the same to be able to directly compare what the same units will display given the same location and data.

I' be interested to know what conclusion you come to.
    Peter

Problems with Garmin set up

Firstly, have you downloaded the locations of caches to your Vista HCx, either from the garmin website or from Geocaching.com? which are the sites that I would recommend.

If you haven't done so, then you have to do that before you can be guided to the caches. On those websites it asks for the location from where you want to look for caches, then lists suitable caches which you can download to your unit, by connecting the USB cable that was provided with it.

Once you have done this, using the find geocache function will bring up a list of the caches that you have downloaded, listed by their geocaching ID. You can, by pressing the menu buttom on the left hand side, select the option to have the caches listed in order of how close to your location they are. To find a little more detail, select the cache with the rocker switch, and press the switch down, which brings up a screen with a bit more detail of the cache.

Hope this helps.

Geocaching with Garmin Etrex Legend CX

The preloaded maps are VERY generic, mostly major highways. They are not useful for geocaching.

The good news is that you can download free topo maps created by a very generous Canadian soul, Dale Atkin. The maps are free but donations are accepted. He is also working on US topo maps. I've used Ibycus and Garmin topo maps and prefer the Ibycus version.
If this solves your situation, please come back and rate our answer. Thankyou.

Unlocking a Garmin etrex venture cx

The unit comes with a base map. You will need to purchase City Navigator software if you want more detailed maps which will show all roads. If the box contained a copy of the City Navigator and you threw away the code, you'll have to purchase another unlock code from Garmin.
