Question about SonicWALL PRO 100 Firewall

1 Answer

How can i handle a user with very high Internet usage on a sonic firewall. We have also load balancing in place with two different Internet providers. Can I setup any alert or something to alarm so that it does not harm usage of other people in the network

    No, we have not set any enhanced software

  • ashaikh Feb 11, 2009

    Sorry for rating you Inappropriate, what i meant to say that we are using 2 lines and both the lines are active for load balancing, there is no backup line as such, both are primary lines, still a user with high usage is making the network jam. Can we avoid this situation? Again sorry didnt meant to condemn you, but that was inappropriate for my situation.

Is one of the circuits the "primary" and the other a "backup"? I forced one of my users to only use the backup circuit and therefore it didnt affect the rest of the users on my network.

If you go to Network-> Routing, you can set a static route to use the secondary default gateway.

    Im not sure why you rated my comment inappropriate, but can you give me more details so we can try to figure it out? Do you need to block this user? Do you have a primary and backup circuit or are they the same?

    Is it worth talking to the user to tell them to stop streaming? That would most likely be why they have higher usage

How connect cisco 5015 vpn with barracuda linkbalancer 330

Your Internet gateway <--- primary router

Port #1 on primary router <---> VPN server
Port #2 on primary router <--> Load Balancer
Load Balancer <--> web-server #1
Load Balancer <--> web-server #2
Load Balancer <--> web-server #3

VPN traffic enters your network, through the router to the VPN server, and then VPN-server back through the router to your internal servers. Web-traffic goes through the Load Balancer, for distribution to the collection of servers.

Yes. The sonicwall is set to provided authenticated Internet Access only. Once your session is up you need to log back in. You can change the timeout. Most sensible places set this to about an hour.

Difference between proxy server firewall and something called a gateway firewall ....Just a homework question..need another angle other then the veryconfusing textbook

In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. The proxy server evaluates the request according to its filtering rules. For example, it may filter traffic by IP address or protocol. If the request is validated by the filter, the proxy provides the resource by connecting to the relevant server and requesting the service on behalf of the client. A proxy server may optionally alter the client's request or the server's response, and sometimes it may serve the request without contacting the specified server. In this case, it 'caches' responses from the remote server, and returns subsequent requests for the same content directly.
A proxy server has many potential purposes, including:
  • To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security).[1]
  • To speed up access to resources (using caching). Web proxies are commonly used to cache web pages from a web server.[2]
  • To apply access policy to network services or content, e.g. to block undesired sites.
  • To log / audit usage, i.e. to provide company employee Internet usage reporting.
  • To bypass security/ parental controls.
  • To scan transmitted content before delivery for malware.
  • To scan outbound content, e.g. for data leak protection.
  • To circumvent regional restrictions.
A proxy server that passes requests and replies unmodified is usually called a gateway or sometimes tunneling proxy.
A proxy server can be placed in the user's local computer or at various points between the user and the destination servers on the Internet.
A reverse proxy is a (usually) Internet-facing proxy used as a front-end to control and protect access to a server on a private network, commonly also performing tasks such as load-balancing, authentication, decryption or caching

A firewall is a dedicated appliance, or software running on a computer, which inspects network traffic passing through it, and denies or permits passage based on a set of rules.
It is a software or hardware that is normally placed between a protected network and an unprotected network and acts like a gate to protect assets to ensure that nothing private goes out and nothing malicious comes in.
A firewall's basic task is to regulate some of the flow of traffic between computer networks of different trust levels. Typical examples are the Internet which is a zone with no trust and an internal network which is a zone of higher trust. A zone with an intermediate trust level, situated between the Internet and a trusted internal network, is often referred to as a "perimeter network" or Demilitarized zone (DMZ).
A firewall's function within a network is similar to physical firewalls with fire doors in building construction. In the former case, it is used to prevent network intrusion to the private network. In the latter case, it is intended to contain and delay structural fire from spreading to adjacent structures.
Without proper configuration, a firewall can often become worthless. Standard security practices dictate a "default-deny" firewall ruleset, in which the only network connections which are allowed are the ones that have been explicitly allowed. Unfortunately, such a configuration requires detailed understanding of the network applications and endpoints required for the organization's day-to-day operation. Many businesses lack such understanding, and therefore implement a "default-allow" ruleset, in which all traffic is allowed unless it has been specifically blocked. This configuration makes inadvertent network connections and system compromise much more likely.

T! lines

A T1 line is a dedicated connection to an Internet backbone router. Typically a T1 line is for major businesses and school campuses. A T1 line is capable of handling 637 simultaneous VOIP connections with full-duplex connection.

How many computers do you intend to have connected to this network? Even a fractal T1 is very expensive. A full T1 connection can cost nearly 25K per month usage. A T1 line will need to be installed by your ISP provider and this too will cost a significant amount of money and it depends on how close your network connection will be in relation to the main network trunk-line.

If you trying to connect a T1 line to a Belkin 54g wireless router, you are way out of your league. I have worked for several networking firms in the Atlanta, GA area and we never had more than a fractal T1. Most small to midsized networks (up to 100) users can be accommodated with using a DSL or Cable Internet connection with a dedicated firewall and router/switch to handle the network traffic. Unless you are willing to pay for a T1 fiber optic line to be run from the main trunk line to your place of business or home, you will be fine with a high speed cable internet connection from an ISP provider like Comcast of Qwest here in the US. Fiber still has an installation cost of about $10,000USD per 1000 feet.

Hope this helps to clarify your problem.

Cheers,

Keith

DMZ HOST IN FVS 124-G

The Netgear FVS124-G is a superb combo VPN firewall DSL/Cable small business router. Loads of features and Dual Wan to boot. I highly recommend it's use in small businesses But... Keeping the necessary firewall, you are missing another component in a properly segmented network, a VLAN switch. It is highly customizable and gives you the configurability and speed you are asking for. Look at it's features here: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/FSxxxT_GSxxxT_smartswitch_UserManual.pdf The normal network security plan is: Internet -->Firewall-->Router (or Firewall/Router)-->VLan Switch-->Individual computers or VLan subnets. Using these two components together makes a more configurable and MUCH easier to setup network than using, say, one Sonicwall, or one CISCO PIX-501-BUN-K9 (which doesn't do VLan and you have to know Pix commands) You get FREE pre-sales and FREE post-sales support from Netgear, so call them on what makes sense for your situation.
