Question about Freecom (24358) 160 GB Network Hard Drive

Failure to Save Files on Backup

I have the 400GB and it has worked well for some time. Now, however, it just says 'failed to back up' or 'error' type message. It doesn't say why or what to do. How can I find what the problem is and address it? Any ideas welcome. Many thanks

The Windows Backup and Restore feature allows you to save files and system images to external backup devices such as hard drives and flash drives. However, backing up files become problematic if the directory your backing up files from isn't configured properly, or if you're having issues with the devices you're backing files to. There are ways to solve or work around backup problems quickly and safely.

Hard Drive b> A backup will not complete if the files you're backing up exceed the amount of space left on the external hard drive. If you're backing up large system files, Microsoft recommends saving the backup to an external hard drive that can hold at least 200 GB. If you're running out of space, you must delete content to create space for others or use another hard drive. Error Codes In some cases, Windows displays the following error codes when it's unable to complete a backup: "0x80070001 (Invalid Function)" or "0x81000037: Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up." These error messages usually appear if Windows is unable to backup a specific library or if you opt out of adjusting your backup settings and settle for the default settings in the Windows Backup and Restore Feature. Reparse Point b> If you're unable to backup a specific library and run into error code messages, removing the reparse point allows you to complete the backup. A reparse point is a file that contains information about the user on a computer. If it doesn't point to a location that contains some of the data you want to backup, error messages appear when you try to back up your files. Type "CMD" in the Start Search box to open the Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt, typing "DIR /AL /S" and pressing Enter lists the reparse points. Each entry says "JUNCTION," which also means reparse point. The entries also tell you the location of the reparse points in Windows Explorer. If you locate a specific reparse point in Windows Explorer, delete its mounted volume from the device's Properties. Once deleted, you should be able to back up your files. Discs b> If you're backing up files to a disc, you'll run into problems if the discs are non-rewritable and already contain data, or if they are severely scratched or damaged. Non-rewritable discs can only be used once, while rewritable discs can be used to read and write data several times. If the CD or DVD you're using is severely scratched, the optical disc drive spins harder than usual in an attempt to read it. If it's incapable of reading the disc, the backup feature may freeze or display an error.

Master hard disc..Message stating that Windows has detected a problem.

Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

+ Start the backup process

* Ask me again later

If the disk fails before the next warning, you could lose all of the programs and documents on the disk.

Immediate steps
Because a disk failure will cause you to lose all programs, files and documents on the disk, you should back up your important information immediately. Try not to use your computer until you have repaired or replaced the hard disk.

I can not setup my asus laptop core i3 from widows 7 that has backup.Actually i do not know widows has or has not in my computer backup

windows 7 has action center that shows up as a white flag at the bottom right hand corner where the rest of the icons are. if there is a problem, there will be a red x on the flag. if you click on it and open it, under maintenance, there should be back up. if the messages for back up are turned off, click "turn on messages for backup" and "set back up" button should appear, or it should already be there. when you click on this button, it will load the backup screen, and ask where you want to save it. since windows backup is designed to save your files in case you experience any type of hardware failure, it will ask you to save your files on either an external harddrive, flash drive, dvd, etc. once you click where you want to save it, it will show you a list of files or folders you can save. choose your files, and windows back up will begin. hope this helps, if you need further assistance, let me know and ill be glad to help.

Issues with a C7972A 400GB tape: I observed that when the backup size reaches over 250GB, the tape starts giving an error that it cannot complete the backup. Is there a limitation on how much data can...

This tape is 200GB with no compression, up to 400GB with compression assuming 2:1 compression ratio. The compression ration is dependent on the type of file e.g. an MP3 file will not compress much, nor will a ZIP or JPG file, but BMP, DOC, TIFF will compress well. In my experience it is best to assume worst case and calculate for no compression i.e. assume max capacity of 200GB.

I want to backup my computers (4) and have maxtor partitioned and used at purchase time, but now when I connect it I get no prompts or choice of hard drive to back up. How do I go about back up?

You have a varity of option to do your backup depending on the type of backup you want to do.
1 Documents and folders
To backup your document and folders you can just copy the Documents and folders to the external drive.
You could also use the backuo feature of the Operating system you have like windows backup to backup your documents and folders.
2 System backup of your system.
You can not use a copy accross to do the complete backup of your system. You can use the windows backup to do this or a third party backup software.
Windows Back for Windows 7.
Click on Start ----- Controll Panel ----- System and Security ------- Set up Backup ------ Select where you want to save your backup ( the external Drive you connected to your system) in the box ------ Next ----- Choose the files or drive you want to backup and click next ------- Review your backup settings and save settings and run back.

This will save your files to the external drive you added to your system.
