Flickering screen on startup

I have a Fujitsu Esprimo laptop. Everytime I on the laptop, with AC power or battery, the LCD screen will appear a white flickering screen. Sometimes, it will load back the XP screen after awhile, sometimes, I need to tilt my LCD panel to and fro or even hit it slightly to get the XP screen. The laptop is running on a XP pro OS SP 2, dual core, 2GB ram and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 display. Can anyone advise if this is hardware fault or software fault? (Softwares installed-Norton, MS office, IE, software bundled with laptop)

Sounds like hardware. Several possibilities come immediately to mind:

1) Backlight is going bad. (It's a fluorescent light).
2) Bad inverter
3) Loose or bad cable in laptop hinge

If the picture is OK using an external monitor, it's probably one of those three.

I've used these guys before for screen repair: Unknown document title.

Compaq V3424au that has a blank screen on startup with all lights

You could have a defective LCD screen, If the laptop appears to be booting up and running and the hard disk is spinning and the hard disk LED light is flashing but the screen is dark then, to determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
