Need Garmin GPS Fix Advice

My Garmin Nuvi 265WT screen appears to be damaged. The actual plastic covering does not appear cracked but when the unit is turned on, it looks like something has damaged the underlying LCD parts. I can still see some things and the unit appears to work fine, I just cant see 1/2 of the screen. I could probably fix it myself if I knew where to get the parts. Any ideas?

Thanks Mike. I will check that. Hopefully that is the problem.

My suspicions are that there is internal damage. When I say 1/2 of the screen is black, this is not a uniform 1/2 but various areas with a central point along the unit's edge where lines of black originate from in all different directions. It almost looks like something stressed the screen along the edge and damaged the LCD beneath.

My LCD screen is bad. I reseated the ribbon cable and this is not the issue. Does anyone know where I could purchase a replacement LCD screen that would work for a Garmin Nuvi 265WT?

I have the same problem except for the screen is not black anywhere. The two cracks make it so that the touch screen does not work properly. I am looking to buy the part myself and fix it or find out where I can get it fixed for cheap. Garmin will charge me $175 to fix it, but I can almost get a new one for that and this ones only 4 months old.

It sounds like the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the controller might be seated incorrectly. I would check that.

  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin 265WT WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

  2. After a hard reset or loss of data, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.

Does your Garmin Nuvi 265WT Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 265WT GPS unit.

I hope that helps.
