Vivitar 283 Flash problem (by 2 users)

I have a Vivitar 283 Flash that is acting up. It sometimes won't charge up
to flash even though the batteries are fresh.

I've tried bending the tabs in the battery compartment, and thumping the
unit on the side from time to time.

Sometime this works, sometimes not.

Anyone have this problem?
