First thing to do is check to see if there is a BIOS update, and install the update.
Second if possible is to swap out the SDRAM Chips if you have one that is KNOWN good.
Then check to see if the BIOS has a setting for AGP speed, If it does make sure it is set
to 2:3 for 100MHz Bus or 1:1 for 66
All PIIIs are multiplier locked (retail and OEM) therefore jumpers are not effective for
setting the multiplier.

The PIII contains a PSN (electronic Processor Serial Number)
This number can be accessed by any code run on your system.
The most likely use for the PSN is to 'LOCK' software to a specific CPU. In
other words when you by a CPU and install M$ (Microsoft) Windoze (Windows) the
following will occur:
1. Run Setup
2. Enter Registration Code that comes with M$ product
3. M$ product retrieves the PSN (if you have a CPU containing a PSN it tells you
the PSN MUST BE enabled to install and run the software)
4. M$ Stores your registration info (M$ Registration code, PSN, The key M$
generated based on the PSN), Name, Address . . . .
5. M$ places a 'key' based on your PSN (the lock) on your system.
6. Install completes:
7a. If you need to re - Install the system will 'check' to make sure the
software is being installed on the same hardware.
7b. If you try to install on a computer containing a different CPU the software
will fail to install, informing you that you need to buy new software, or at a
minimum pay a re registration fee, to install the software on that system.
Of course this will mean you will no longer have a 'choice' as to turning the
PSN off. You will be forced to have it 'on'.
Once it is on there are a lot of other possibilities
Please be advised there are other issues about the PIII such
as the 'Chip ID' or PSN 'Feature'
The PSN is nothing by itself, it can't give anyone much
information on its own, just that if you open a page and get
one of those 'You want to run . . .?' It could contain code
to get your PSN and send it to XYZ Corp. This could happen
with or without your knowledge, unlike what many CLAIM here.
You just have to run the program, it does not HAVE to say we
are getting your PSN.
So they have your PSN, for the sake of this discussion, lets
say they didn't tell you they got it. They now ask for your
Name, Address, C/C# . . . For whatever reason you feel
compelled to give, and that's fine everything is still cool.
Now you got to 123 find your ancestors.com, again they get
your PSN, and they may even tell you they are getting it, to
keep you from having to re-enter information and 'better
serve you'. They again get your Name and you give them your
Mothers maiden name. Again seems pretty clear cut, after
all you are looking for your mothers ancestors.
Now imagine this. People say it is hypothetical, but
existing practices and technology makes it a real
possibility.
Now companies XYZ buys 123, or they just decide to share
information. Then the companies have put all your
information in one location held by one database. This
would make it easy for a disgruntled employee, a hacker, or
??? To gain access to your Name, Address, Phone #, Mothers
Maiden Name (Most Credit cards Companies use a mothers
maiden name as a security (Identity) check. (They figure
[wrongly] only you would know your mothers maiden name.)
This would allow someone to change your credit card
information rack up charges in your name . . .
Another option:
Some people or companies set up computers on the backbone of
the internet and capture information with the PSN. aka
(Packet sniffing) They without your knowledge or consent
capture information such as your PSN and other data that you
send (assuming that this is without encryption) and over the
course of time they can create an EXTREMELY detailed file
not only about where you go and what you do, but also who
you are!!
I know some will say this is nothing more than a conspiracy
theory, to them, and you, I ask have you ever heard of an
identity thief? There are storiesabout them on TV at least
2 - 3 times a month. What they do is gather enough
information to pass themselves off as you, then they rack up
$100,000s of dollars in charges using your name! As of yet
there is no legislation to protect you, and you ARE liable
for the charges!!!! Your only recourse according to Federal
law is to go after the person who stole your identity. We
both know they won't have the resources to pay the bills,
so you are left holding the purse full of IOUs!
If this is not bad enough then there are all the other
issues related to a PSN, ability to track your movements
through the net (I know they can track you by IP, but most
people get a different IP every time they log on). The PSN
has such a potential for abuse that many reasonable people
believe it is not Safe, that the risks far outweigh the
benefits, at least at the consumer level. Big business
loves the idea!
Lastly many say 'Well you can turn it off' My response is
that I can turn it off NOW, but as the installed base of
PSNs (the number of PIIIs) rises it will become MANDATORY
that you use your PSN. Your ISP could even use your PSN as
a method of logging in. This would be a HUGE help to them
to keep friends from sharing a ISP account. Of Course it
also requires that you have your PSN turned on. If you are
like me you sign on from different locations all the time.
Guess you will need an account for each computer now!!! ;)
I could go on with hundreds of other possibilities, but I
think you see the point!

in this newsgroup do not want 'ongoing debates' to be here.
Hope this lends an understanding.
