Question about Sony Handycam CCD-TRV68 Camcorder

Sony analogue Hi8 Handycam as a security camera

I have an old Sony Hi8 Handycam, not being used, going to waste, and I'd like to use it as a 24/7 security camera, maybe feed back to a monitoring PC to do screen captures and save digital files, still or movie - just to chance a face shot of trespassers.
Tricks would be to have the camera powered (on) constantly and constant screen captures to an external HDD which over-writes itself after filling (say after a weeks worth of footage).

Extremely low low budget.

Maybe i didn't explain it all properly: I don't want to record on the tape, I want the camera to act as the eyes only and record to the computer.

I have a video capture card i use for copying VHS videos to DVD, but the problem is getting the camera to stay on and using the "constant" loop recording.

I'll look at your link and see what I can get from that.

And, I don't intend purchasing any gear for this task. If that was the case I'd rather chuck the camera and buy a proper wireless security camera for $200.

I'll get back to you. (I wont forget to rate a fellow 'Expert').

Hi!

You need to have things with you before you can proceed to use it as a security camera. As your's is a analog camera we will require a video capture card connected with your pc/laptop.

After you have one connect that with your pc and pTo get the video into your computer, you need a analogue to digital video capture card....otherwise, connect the camcorder to a CD or DVD player/recorder, and use the CD/DVD as a source for your video editing... Otherwise, you need a later model of SONY "Digital 8" digital camcorder which plays analogue tape, and with this your computer can capture the video via firewire

For details on how to record using a software and video capture card please look at this link---

Not many cameras will use all formats in them no, but once your movie is on your hard-drive of the PC you can copy the film to any other media.

I have a sony ccd trv 138 hi8

it seams that it has a usb streaming /connection feature..so all you need its a driver and a cable to connect it to a computer ..
http://videodrivers.es/analog-8mm-hi8-camcorders-version-10-cd-mavica-camera-version-10-cyber-shot-cameras-versi/download-110.html
all I found its a driver for hi8 camcorders but it seams that is for windows 2000 ...anyway some drivers work on xp just fine even if they were build for 2K ...its worth a try ...if not ..you can get a alder cheap computer and keep it with 2000 ( if we dont find the xp driver ) ...just for downloading and operating this camcorder...

Convert a Hi8 to cd

Hi 8 tapes are analogue and need to be converted to digital before a DVD can be made of them. You can pass the signal through a digital video camera to the computer to convert them. Only very short videos could be copied onto a CD as most video files are much larger than a CD's capacity.
I'm not sure about digital 8 but maybe the camera only has an analogue output? If the lead goes to RCA plugs - that is analogue. A firewire socket means a digital output.

Video transfer from sony handycam ccd-trv 308 hi8 to a computer

I have a sony handycam ccd-trv 308 hi8 analog camcorder and I was trying to transfer videos from it to my computer. However, when I plug the S-video cable to the handycam and my computer, nothing happens. Does my computer require a driver to recognize the handycam because I cannot find any in the sites of sony for my handycam's model. Or am I using the wrong wire?
