If the volume control is all grayed out, locked like you said then your sound driver is missing or corrupt. You will need to re-install the sound driver.
go into control panel, Hardware and Sound click on the sound and the Volume control should pop back up for you i hope this was helpful don't forget to rate
Hopefully this helps. Right click on your volume control icon. Open the "Volume Mixer," and make sure that nothing has the mute X on. Then right click on "Volume Control," and make sure that the volume control is checked to play all sounds, and that your Speaker box is checked. Next step is your music, if the sound was muted directly @ the music playback, this could be the problem. Open your Media Player and try to play music, if you cannot hear it, click on the mute button to the song playing. If your Player was shut off in the "mute" mode, then you will not hear sound. It Happened to me once. You will need to check all of your "Players" to see if any of them were shut off in "mute."
you have to make sure you increased the volume on the computer itself.go to the control panel and click on sound, speech and audio devices.change the volume settings and speaker settings.this should bring about the desired result.
dirty switch. I took my 2009m apart and cleaned the switches with alcohol on a qtip and the problem's gone. Not too hard to do. Leverage the case gently with a putty knife or something and it will pop open. Then pop around the edge to remove the back completely.

The motherboards model number will be printed on the board in failrly large letters and numbers. You may have to move a few things out of the way to find it though.
