Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Door won't open or close

I have a Craftsman 1/2 hp opener. It is pretty old, and I don't know the lingo to describe it any better....large springs, track with a chain is about the best I can do. It will not open or close, and this is the first time it has happened. It sounds as though it is trying to open, but nothing happens. Could it be off track???

If you have a Chraftsman/Liftmaster:
1.Check to see if the door is running correctly.  A. Run the door down and pull the emergency release. See if the door will run easily by itself.
  1. If it runs hard by hand try lubricating the rollers and hinges with silicone spray or some form of lubricant (not WD 40)
  2. If the door is heavy and falls back to the ground, you probably have a spring issue (either broken or needs more tension) in this case call a professional door repair company in your area.
2. If the door runs fine your gears might br out of your opreator. Open the case and look for a white powder. If you see that and your gears look worn repace the gears with 41c4220a gear kit.
( with the 5 flashing the traveler is jammed up against the top bolt. The same part will fix the problem be sure to replace the bottom bushing on the motor bracket.)

How do I troubleshoot a garage door sensor

Watch the lights, make sure they do not flicker or blink when you push the button. If they do, then you need to make a better contact by pointing them straighter. If not, then it's not a sensor problem it's probably force. Describe your issue more detail and I can give you a better answer.

Craftsman Door Opener Model #139 53975SRT1 1/2 HP will not open the garage door. It will close it. And if it's on the way down and I hit enter, it will open mid stream. But, if it's closed, an

Two things. Check for a broken door spring. If okay, remove the cover from the motor housing and check for a bad drive gear. This is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. If it is going bad it should be obvious.

My Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener does up about 4 inches and stops. When I press the opener again it goes down and reopens all the way. What is wrong with it?

Check your door springs to make sure you don't have a broken spring. Remove the cover from the opener motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if this is going bad. On the rear of the motor unit you will find the 'up force' control. Increase this just a bit. This will compensate for door springs getting tired.

I have a sears craftsman garage door opener 139.18805 1/2 HP or 139.18850 the machine is about 6 years old and it has just started to act up. It will open only part way about 4 ft then I can close it then...

Take a close look at your door springs. Could be a broken one. If not, remove the cover and look at the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. May be going bad. It will be obvious if it is. Release the door from the opener and try opening it by hand. If it is heavy you have a spring problem.

Garage door only raises about two inches then stops.

Check the door springs and also remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. The door spring could be broken or the drive gear may be stripped.

The sensors only work when the door is closing.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage opener opens only 6 inches

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It may be stripped. Take a close look at those door springs. They can sometime appear to be okay when one is broken.

Door openly opens 5-6 in, then stops.

If the door isn't unusually heavy when you open it manually then maybe an adjustment will help. On the back of the motor unit you will find the 'up force' control. Increase it 1/4 turn and try.

Belt drive track arm bows up

YOU MAY NEED TO GET THE SPRING ON THE DOOR ADJUSTED.

WHEN AN OPENER IS INSTALLED THE SPRING SHOULD BE SET A LITTLE HEAVY. YOU WANT THE DOOR TO SLOWLY DRIFT CLOSED IF LEFT HALFWAY UP.

IT SOUNDS LIKE EITHER YOUR SPRING NEEDS ADJUSTMENT OR THE DOOR BINDS AT THE BOTTOM - HOW DOES IT WORK MANUALLY??

IF YOU CAN'T CLOSE IT WITH 3 FINGERS THE OPENER WILL HAVE TROUBLE.

YES THE CRAFTSMAN RAIL IS WEAK MAKING IT THAT MUCH MORE CRITICAL TO SET THE HEIGHT PER INSTRUCTIONS AND MAKE SURE THE DOOR WORKS EASILY,

HOPE THIS HELPS

Motor hums but door will not open or close.

Well Good thing is that sears openers have not changed much int eh way they are hooked up. If you have a chain drive you can pretty much buy and chain drive sears opener and it should bolt right up. But you might have to run safety sensors as of 1993 they have to be on all openers. Also if you are going to do a motor head change out make sure your chain and door are in the closed position. All openers will start up once they are plugged in
