Setup your Xbox to a Wireless Network

Xbox game consoles can be connected <span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span> to a router<a href="http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/routers/g/bldef_router.htm"></a> for wireless access to the Internet and Xbox Live. Follow these instructions to set up the Xbox or Xbox 360 connections to a wireless home network.<br /><br /> <ol> <li>Connect the appropriate wireless network adapter<a href="http://compnetworking.about.com/od/hardwarenetworkgear/g/bldef_adapter.htm"></a> to the console. On the Xbox, a Wi-Fi adapter that connects to the Ethernet sometimes also called a wireless network bridge must be used. Alternatively, the Xbox 360 is also designed to work with certain Wi-Fi <i>game adapters</i> that connect to a USB port.<br /><br /></li> <li>Turn on the console and navigate to the wireless settings screen. On the Xbox, the menu path is "Settings -&gt; Network Settings -&gt; Advanced -&gt; Wireless -&gt; Settings" On the Xbox 360, the menu path is "System -&gt; Network Settings -&gt; Edit Settings."<br /><br /></li> <li>Set the SSID (network name) on the Xbox to match that of the wireless router. If your wireless router has enabled SSID broadcast, the SSID name should appear pre-selected on the Xbox display. Otherwise, select the "Specify Unlisted Network" option and enter the SSID there.<br /><br /></li> <li>Specify "Infrastructure" as the Network Mode. (Infrastructure is the mode used by wireless routers.)<br /><br /></li> <li>Set the Security Type to match that of the wireless router. If your router uses WPA encryption and the type of adapter connected to the Xbox does not support WPA, you will need to change your router settings to use WEP encryption instead. Note that the standard MS Xbox Adapter supports WPA while the standard Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter (MN-740) only supports WEP.<br /></li> <li>Save your settings and verify the network is functional.<br /><br /> On the Xbox, the Wireless Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made with the wireless router, and the Connect Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made through the Internet to Xbox Live.<br /><br /> On the Xbox 360, use the "Test Xbox Live Connection" option instead.</li></ol> Tips: <ol> <li>Even when your wireless connection between the Xbox and the router is working perfectly, you may still experience difficulty connecting to Xbox Live. These issues can be caused by the quality of your Internet connection or the firewall and Network Address Translation (NAT) settings of your wireless router. Additional troubleshooting may be required in these areas to achieve reliable Xbox Live connections.</li></ol><span style="font-weight: bold;">Troubleshooting</span><br /><br /> The built-in diagnostic of the Xbox can help with any falure.Navigate to the <i>System</i> area of the Xbox Dashboard, select the <i>Network Settings</i> menu option, then select <i>Test Xbox Live Connection</i> to run the test at any time. If your wireless router is not near your console, you may get a better wireless signal by using a wireless networking adapter. How to set up the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter

Overview

If you connected to Xbox LIVE after October 28, 2009, a software update was installed on your Xbox 360 console to support the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter. If the update was installed on your console, all you need to do is to configure the wireless settings. To learn how to do this, please see the following article:
908877 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908877/ ) How to configure wireless settings on your Xbox 360 console
If you have not connected to Xbox LIVE since October 28, 2009, you will need to use the installation disc included with your Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adaptor to install software on your Xbox 360 console.

To install the software for a Wireless N Networking Adapter

1. If an Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter is plugged in to your console, unplug it.

2. Insert the installation disc included with the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adaptor into your Xbox 360 console.

3. Turn off the console.

4. Turn the console back on.

The software update should start automatically. If the update does not start automatically, the software might already be installed.

Note If you receive a mixed media error message, please see the section titled "Mixed media error message" below.
5. When you are prompted to install the software, select Yes, update now.

6. If a network cable is plugged in to the back of your console, unplug it.

7. Once the installation is complete, plug the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adaptor into the USB port on the back of your console.

For information about attaching and configuring your wireless adapter, please see the following article: 908877 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908877/ ) How to configure wireless settings on your Xbox 360 console

8. Remove the installation disc from the disc drive.

9. Turn off your console, and then turn it on again.

Mixed media error message

If you receive a mixed media error message, auto-play might be turned off. Here’s how to turn it on:

1. On your console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.

2. Select Console Settings.

3. Select Auto-Play.

4. Select Enable.5. Repeat the steps for installing the wireless adapter (above).

Do not take your Xbox 360 console or accessories to a retailer for repair or service unless an Xbox support agent instructs you to do this.

Do not try to disassemble, service, or modify the Xbox 360 console, the power supply, or any accessories. If you do this, you might put yourself at risk of serious injury or death from electric shock or fire. For your own safety, such actions will void your warranty.

I just bought a Belkin wireless router for my internet to connect with my microsoft xbox 360 wireless adapter. the light turns on the adapter but it is a amber color and not red or green like always...

I've never heard of a Wireless Adapter turning amber or orange? This can be a simple light problem inside your Xbox 360. If it were fixed, the highest possibility is that color should be red. If so, this means the connection is not strong enough to your modem, and adapter. You will have move your Xbox 360 console closer to your wireless modem for the connection to be the best.

  • Steady red light: The adapter is ready to be configured. For information on how to do this, please see: 908877 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908877/ ) How to configure wireless settings on your Xbox 360 console

  • Not illuminated: The adapter is not receiving power. Unplug the USB connector and plug it in again. Still no light? Try plugging the adapter into a USB port on the front of the console.

  1. On the console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Configure Network.
  4. On the Basic Settings tab, select Wireless Mode.

Note If wireless mode is not available and you are using the black Wireless N Networking Adapter, try using the software installation disc included with the adapter. For more information about how to do this, please see the following article:
977641 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977641/ ) How to set up the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter
  5. Select Scan for Networks.
  6. Select your wireless network name.

If your network is not listed, try the following:
    1. Select Specify Unlisted Network, and enter your wireless network name (also referred to as your Service Set Identifier [SSID]).
    2. Select your wireless security: WEP, WPA, WPA2, or No Security (if your network doesn't have a password).

If you can't connect to your wireless network, try improving your wireless signal using the tips in the following article:
      909336 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909336/ ) Your Xbox 360 console receives a weak wireless signal

  7. Enter your wireless network password, and then select Done.

Note Make sure that you have entered the correct password. An incorrect password might allow your console to connect to your wireless network, but you might receive an IP address error when you test your Xbox LIVE connection.
  8. Press B on your controller, and then select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

If you successfully connect to Xbox LIVE, you'll see this screen:

IPaddress failed

When this sort of thing happens it is usually a DNS error. The easiest thing to do would be to cycle your network. You can do this by unplugging your dsl/cable modem for a minute and plugging it in again.

XB360 also has a network test option that will tell you where in the network the connection is failing in the case that it is not a DNS problem.
