Gigabyte GA-6BX7 Motherboard

"Magic Booster" [GA-6BX7]

By Powe33 - usenet poster

Hello there,

I've got a problem with this machine of mine-
A flip-chip Celeron 533A (first FC-PGA Celeron)
on a GA-6BX7 with F4 bios (i440BX).

The mainboard has a jumper called the "Magic Booster" that is supposed to
increase the Core Voltage of the processor (which is autodetected) by 10%.
Now, I am a lucky bugger with aforementioned Celeron, because it will
actually hit the 800MHz AND
operate reliably with a mere 10% increase in voltage- which would be .15V-
so from 1.5V (stock voltage) it is increased to 1.65V.
I have tested it on two other mainboards at 800MHz with 1.65V
(Abit and Asus models) and it is rock solid, with standard cooling.

The problem is the GA-6BX7 not providing the 1.65V, but only 1.6V.
I take a look at the core voltage in the bios, it is reported as being 1.6V.
As a result the processor "seems" to operate reliably, occasionally crashing
in certain situations.

Why would the GA-6BX7 do that?
Does anyone have any ideas?

Magic booster is just one of several names the Taiwan have used for the same
thing, it is the same as the Voodoo setting, and VCC3 for that matter.

I am little confused about this. The GA-BX2000+ has a Magic Booster
jumper JP3 and Voodoo jumpers JP20 and JP21. Is the Magic Booster
labeled correctely on this motherboard? I thought the Voodoo jumper
was intended for AGP cards with a high current demands.

On the GA-BX7+, the Magic Booster jumper JP3 has five different
settings. They are as follows:

3-4 close = 10%
5-6 close = 20%
7-8 close = 30%
9-10 close = 40%
11-12 close = 50%

The other boards (BX2000+ and BX7) only have one setting which is 10%.

Now lets go back to the GA-BX7 motherboard. You are saying that
"Magic Booster" label in the manual is wrong and it should really be
labeled as a "Voodoo" jumper. Is this also labeled incorrectly for
other motherboards?

Thank you for responding
Well, that would certainly explain why it wouldn't work as I expected it
to...
The manual gave me the impression this particular jumper was exactly for
this purpose.
The strange thing is the magic booster does actually increase the Vcore from
1.5V to 1.6V.

The mainboard itself is a great product though.

Basically this is just a bad translation in the manual, this is intended for
AGP cards with a high power demand.

In the GA-6BX7+ manual, page 23 shows JP3 is the CPU Over Voltage
Select (Magic Booster). When JP3 3-4 Pin set "close", CPU
Voltage is rising 10%.

That is what my user manual says. It doesn't say anything
about raising the AGP slot voltage.

Other motherboards such as the GA-BX2000+ may have a Voodoo
jumper that can raise the voltage of the AGP slot, but the
6BX7 may not have that jumper.

The magic booster is designed to raise the voltage for the AGP slot, its not
really for overclocking the processor.
