Do a search for Iexplore.exe thru the search function in your start menu. If it finds the program, right click on the icon to send to desktop (create shortcut). That should take care of the issue.

You can create an icon on the desktop, but the new download of IE8 still does not launch. If you click on the new icon, or if you go to Windows/IE8/iexplorer.exe and try to launch directly you only get the hour-glass pointer for a seconds or so and then nothing! Sp what do you really need to do?

Automatically Slipstream Windows XP SP3 plus Hotfixes usign scripts

Ross Smith has one of best methods available to create your self a slipstreamed Windows XP with SP3 installed and all the critical hotfixes, the only problem is that he stopped developing it in April 2009 so the list is about 40 hotfixes short, network installation SP3 version HERE

smithi's great script http://smithii.com/slipstream_xpsp3 please will you update it Ross ?

I also like using RVM Integrator v1.6.7 OR Autostreamer v1.0.30 to slipstream SP3 first to a folder containing the Windows XP SP2 I386 files this will give you a installation folder with all the SP3 files integrated.

Paul Thurrott's WinSupersite gives you a manual method if you prefer tutorial with screendumps HERE also how to exrtract the microsoft image file so that you can create your own bootable CD

Then download the Hotfixes EF2 list for use with using IDM from my public skydrive HERE is my exported list OR if you prefer use Windows Update Downloader and download one of the update lists, you must double click the ULZ file to install it into the interface, update lists HERE

N.B>these 2 won't slipstream, but they can be run after windows is installed:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/7/1/971f55c8-d512-494f-9c5e-7cc3f9b190ee/msxml4-KB954430-enu.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/7/5/2753aabc-24de-41be-a05b-d41fc76f3aad/msxml6-KB954459-enu-x86.exe

There are other alternatives like hfslip (similiar to smithi's script) and nLite + WinUpdateDownloader I have had limited success with both of them however there are alot of Program Addons available for nLite like WMP11 and IE8 and a whole list from MSFN available HERE

Microsoft updates do not install

You have not said which OS you are using so; from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

When you try to install Windows updates from the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or by using Automatic Update, you receive a message that the update is not installed successfully. Additionally, the update is not displayed in the update history.

You may experience this issue in the following scenarios:

Scenario 1 You try to install updates after repair a Windows XP installation by using the Windows XP CD.
Scenario 2 You perform the following operations before you try to install Windows updates:

You perform a new installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
You visit the Windows Update Web site, or the Microsoft Update Web site.
Note When you visit the update Web site, the latest version of Windows Update software will be installed in your computer.
You install Windows XP Service Pack (SP3) without a restart.
You try to install Windows updates after the install of Windows XP SP3.

Then cause ;

This issue occurs because the Wups2.dll file that is included in the latest version of Windows Update is not installed correctly.

For scenario 1, the registry entries that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing after the repair install of Windows XP. The release version of Windows XP does not contain the Windows Update software.

For scenario 2, the registry entries that correspond to Windows Update are changed back to the Windows XP SP2 version if you did not restart the computer before you install Windows XP SP3. The registry entries for the Wups2.dll file are changed to pointing to the Wups.dll file that is included in the release version of Windows XP SP2.
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods;

Method 1: Download and install the Windows Update Agent,
For an x86-based computer; http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

For an x64-based computer http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe

Method 2: Register the Wups2.dll file,

To have MS register the Wups2.dll file in Windows for you, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144#FixItForMeAlways.

If you prefer to fix this problem yourself,

To register the Wups2.dll file in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Open the Command Prompt window. To do this, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
net stop wuauserv

2. Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

a. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

Note For a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll

b. Click OK if you receive a verification message.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
net start wuauserv

4. Exit the Command Prompt window. To do this, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

I want to know on how to uninstall IE8 on my computer i am running a windows XP service pack 3. I just want to install a fresh copy of IE8 . . . . .

Hi josephc_agni,

You cannot uninstall Internet Explorer 8 if it is set as not removable. This occurs if you install Internet Explorer 8 before you install Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. If this scenario applies to you, then you must uninstall SP3 before you can uninstall Internet Explorer 8.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows Internet Explorer 8, and then click Remove.

NOTE: If Windows Internet Explorer 8 does not appear in the list of installed updates, try the alternative step given below.
  5. Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
  6. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
ALTERNATIVE STEP:

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:
  1. Carefully select and then copy the following command: %windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type Cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
  4. Right-click inside the Cmd.exe window, and then click Paste to paste the command that you copied in step 1.
  5. Press ENTER to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
  6. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.

Won't install without error message

Excerpt from: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/01/26/upgrading-to-internet-explorer-8-release-candidate-1.aspx

There is 1 update required when running IE8 RC1 on multi-core XPSP2 x86 computers:
KB932823 or KB946501.
This update resolves a problem in which an access violation occurs when an application exists on a Windows XP SP2-based multi-core computer. It will be installed automatically if you select “Install the latest updates” option in Setup Wizard. If this update fails to install successfully, IE8 installation will be blocked until you manually install this update from Microsoft Download Center.
So see if you can do a manual install of this update. There are a number of other suggestions in the above link that might also help.

Good Luck!
