How to connect tv, direct tv box, and home theater together properly ?

Hi Vincent

That would be a heap of detail to go into. Time consuming...

Hopefully this quick pointer might help.

What is HDMI
High Definition MultiMedia Interface

Note the word MultiMedia
This Means....Both HD Video & Sound through the one cable.

HDMI is the latest state of the art connection.
Use this wherever possible. It's made for High Definition
More Convenient

Use a HDMI cable from one device to the other wherever both devices have that port type (connector).

You don't have to pay a premium ridiculous price for HDMI Cables as in the Monster type. Overpriced.
Well made regular brand & Gold pins are nice. Keep them Short.
Long Cables loose quality. 1 Meter is default.

Your LCD TV should have more than one HDMI port for inputting & outputting media (sound & video)

HDMI can be used for INPUT or OUTPUT
Eg OUT to an Amplifier or IN from a device like DVD Player.

On the OLDer equipment you will Have a YELLOW connector. That is used for the Video signal.
The RED is RIGHT AUDIO.
The WHITE is LEFT AUDIO.
Fiber OPTIC cables are a better way to transfer AUDIO than the red & white cables. Cleaner.
But this only works if the 2 devices have an optical port available.

Some New Amplifiers are smart and may require you to select the optical port in the settings instead of the default HDMI.
This may also apply to HDMI Port Choice.
Simply plug the HDMI in first & check.
Use a known source e.g. play a DVD or CD or Radio Reveiver as a signal.
ONE HDMI Port on the TV might be an OUTPUT ONLY channel (PORT) to an External Amplifier (if you wish to use one)

HDMI on external devices will be Outputing video & sound on their HDMI Port
To the INPUT HDMI PORTS on the TV.

Some TV's will fall back to a particular HDMI port on power fail or startup therefore not requiring you to use the remote every time.

External SPEAKERS should have the polarity checked. Eg Red (or marked wire) to the same post on either speaker. This makes sure that the speakers travel forward together at the same time. Pumping sound forward then retracting together....
so they are not fighting against each other.
.......This is called out of phase & distorts sound.

Hope this Helps

Enjoy Your New Entertainment

.......Then give me a tick of approval for my trouble....

Cheers

Could you tell me the steps to hook up my vcr & my dvd players to my tv. And what cables and or devices I need to accomplish this task?

It will depend on the devices. Most VCRs will have composite and S-video outputs. For this you will need either a composite audio/video cable (3 RCA plugs on each end: yellow (video) and red and white (audio)) or an S-video cable and a separate audio cable. The DVD player will probably have component video or HDMI outputs, depending on its age. The component video requires a 3 plug RCA video cable (red, green, blue) and a 2 plug RCA audio cable (red and white). Some DVD players have composite outputs as well. However, this limits you to an SD video output and isn't recommended, unless your TV doesn't have any HD inputs.

If your TV has one each of the appropriate input ports or 2 composite video ports, you just need those cables, assuming you have no other devices that have filled the inputs. Always connect the devices with the TV and the A/V components off. Match the color of the plug to the port. If you mix up the colors on component video cable, you may get a black&white picture. Some newer TVs use an adapter dongle to convert composite or component video to single port on the input board. Again match the colors at the dongle and then plug in the adapter. If your TV has shared composite and component signals, use the HDMI port output on the DVD player, if possible, or get a Audio/Video switch, like this: http://www.amazon.com/Panlong-Switcher-Composite-Selector-Consoles/dp/B00KXVBB3Q/ref=sr_1_24?s=audio-video-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1440632814&sr=1-24 .

Please add a comment with the make and model of your specific TV, VCR and DVD player. I hope this helps.

How do I hook up my Apple TV to onyko 8050 receiver?

Hi Barry
AppleTV has 2 Outputs on the back. One is Optical for Audio Only and requires a Toslink fibre optic cable to get the good quality audio into the 8050 receiver via the Game 1 Port.
The second connector is HDMI which is a compact low profile cable which transfers both HD1080 Video and Left & Right Audio to another device.
The built in WiFi should be picking up your Router WiFi in the house and transferring iTunes music to these Ports. Just play a song on iTunes on your computer & click the icon to select AirPlay on your ATV.
There are a heap of HD TV's and Amp's etc using HDMI these days.
It's the simplest way to get connected & its the best quality.
Unfortunately the Onyko 8050 uses a proprietary port which is not directly compatible.
I noticed all the Video Ports on the back of the Onyko are the old fashioned Yellow RCA connectors. (Called Composite Video.)
There are converter boxes & cables of various sorts that you could use on eBay, Amazon etc.

NOTES:
Many modern Amplifiers also become the main SwitchBox to transfer Video & Audio from one device to another. eg. My Pioneer VSX-922 has 5 HDMI input ports and 1 HDMI output port along with an assortment of RGB & Toslink Inputs & Outputs.
This way (via remote control) I can choose the Apple TV to Connect to the Plasma HD TV or The DVD Player to play Video or Audio to the Speakers. HDMI Makes the cabling so much easier.

For Future reference, when checking out new HiFi gear, always check the ports on the back of the unit.
Your Ports/Cables go by age.
1: Yellow-Composite Video RCA Plug (oldest)
2: Red & White RCA Plug (Audio Left & Right)
3: S-Video-Mini Din Connector (Video Only)
4: RGB- Component Video (Red,Green,Blue-Video Only)
5: DVI- Digital Video Interface (HiDef Video Only)
6: Toslink- Fiber Optic (Audio Only)
7. HDMI-High Definition Media Interface (HD Video & Audio)
I Hope this Explanation Helps Many Others with Similar Problems.

I can not get the video to work for my DVD, only the audio. I am quite sure I'm using the remote correctly, and I have the DVD player hooked up correctly, although I do not have a yellow cable, only red...

You're now connected the devices by an AV cable I assumes. With an AV cable, there will be 3 wires; red & white is meant to pass the audio signal [left & rigit] and yellow one for video. Connect these wires to both devices, as per color code of the respective sockets of the devices.

Volume not working

You need to connect RCA cables Left/Right "audio out" on the back of your cable box to the "audio in" on your TV. Also, if you have a LCD HD tv you need to set the audio output to Analog NOT Digital.
Should work as I had a similar problem with a Comcast HD box and Remote.
