Re: Dell 948 printer- won't print in black and white
HTML clipboardHi, Try REMOVING THE POWER CABLE to printer for 1 minute then try again (some printers auto reset to factory settings after 1 minute)
But if not TRY REINSTALLING PRINTER DRIVER
1. TURN OFF PRINTER
2. Remove BOTH CABLES from printer. YES... even power cable.
3. Go to START & choose CONTROL PANEL.
4. Choose PRINTERS
5. Choose PRINTERS & FAXES
6. Select problem PRINTER icon (click on icon)
7. Choose FILE then select REMOVE / DELETE
8. CLOSE computer down.
9. RECONNECT both PRINTER CABLES
10. SWITCH ON printer.
11. SWITCH ON computer
12. Allow computer to find printer and REINSTALL software.
13. Your printer should now respond as normal.

Please check if your Colour Ink Cartridge is not emply. If their's ink in the cartridge then try to service your printer through the Print Preferences. Your Colour Cartridge Nozzels could have been blocked thats why your printer is unable to print in Colour.
In case if both the above doesn't work then check in the Print Preferences that you should not have saved the option of PRINT DOCUMENT IN BLACK ONLY. hope this helps , AJ
I had the same problem and just figured it out! On your control panel, choose printer and then Properties. Go to Printing Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. Under this tab is a button for More Options and then a section Complete-A-Print. I had to uncheck "use color cartridge for all black printing" and then check "use black cartridge to print in black and white." Then I had the option back to print in black and white. I have a Dell Photo 964 but I'm assuming the options should be the same. Hope this helps someone!
The problem was that the print options had switched to print using the color cartridge to make up for my empty black ink cartridge.
After you click on print, and then click the preferences button, next go to the Advanced tab. Once there, there should be another button that says, More options. Once that tab is opened, check the box that says, "Use black cartridge to print in black and white."
I was convinced that something was wrong with my new printer cartridge and called Dell. Unfortunately, they wouldn't or couldn't help me and I just lucked up this solution.
I know you can print in Greyscale which prints in black and white only. On your Windows computer, you should just be able to click Start -> Printers and Faxes, then right-click your printer and choose Printing Preferences. Look for a tab that says Color and click it. There should be a selection, probably a check box, that lets you choose "Print in Greyscale". Afterwards, when you print, even color documents will print in black-and-white only.
Go here. In the search box in the center of the screen, type "print with black ink only" and click Search. Choose the appropriate link, and you will get instructions for printing from either Windows or Mac.
