Re: mac laptop hooked up to HP laserjet 4 plus gets error...
You have two choices:
1) Purchase and install a Postscript SIMM or Cartridge. This will allow you to use the standard Apple driver which is Postscript (likely the one you are presently trying to use)
2) Simply use the generic PCL driver included in your list of drivers on your Mac. The driver name is "HP Laserjet Series PCL 4/5, 1.3" This will allow you to print using PCL the native page decription language of your printer.
The error "W2 Invalid Pers" means that you are sneding a print job in Postscript whne the printer only "speaks" PCL.

My suspiction is there is a tab on the tray that triggers a switch telling the printer what type of tray has been inserted. Your old tray is likely different from the Plus 4 tray and the printer knows it.
The job needs the correct language i.e., Postscript, PCL 5 or 6 installed. You're trying to print a job in a particular language that isn't installed on your printer. You need to load the correct driver.
FROM THE SERVICE MANUAL
W2 INVALID PERS:
The job was not printed because the requested personality,
such as PostScript, was not installed. Install the language in
which the files are sent, together with enough memory to
support that language.
I SUGGEST CHECK IF YOU GOT THE POSTSCRIPT INSTALLED
49.XXXX PRINTER ERROR To continue turn the printer off then on
The printing operation has been aborted. The issue can be caused by a firmware error, invalid print commands, corrupt data, invalid operations, poor quality parallel cables, poor connections or specific applications.
Press Cancel Job to clear the print job from the printer memory.
Turn the printer off and then on to clear the error message.
Try printing a job from a different software program. If the job prints, go back to the first program and try printing a different file. If the message appears only with a certain software program or print job, contact the software vendor for assistance.
If the above action does not solve the issue, contact HP or authorized service provider.
HP LaserJet 4, 4m, 4 Plus and 4m Plus Series Printers - False Error Message 13 PAPER JAM
After clearing all jammed paper from the HP LaserJet 4, 4m, 4 Plus, or 4m Plus series printer, the display still reads 13 Paper Jam . Even after cycling the power off and then back on, the error remains.
Open the rear door of the printer. There is a paper sensor near the upper right hand corner of the fusing assembly (just below the right edge of the long yellow warning sticker on the fuser) that can cause paper jam error messages even when there is no jammed paper in the printer. Toggle the thin black plastic lever up and down to make sure it is not stuck or sticky. The lever should be in the down position before closing the back of the printer. If the lever is stuck or missing, the printer will generate a false paper jam message.
Hope it will help you !
