If your using win 7 download the program called unassociate, usually unassoc.exe it unassociates files from a certain program, but the best solution is to back up your files and reformat to wipe out whatever virus is in there and to have a clean and fresh install.
suggest you get yourself a USB hard drive, bigger than the size of all your important files. if you have 20GB of important files, get a external usb drive of atleast 60 or more I don't know if they actually sell that small drives anymore just make sure you have enought room.
2. get the the windows installation cd
with the windows installation cd you can format the hard drive in the setup
3. while in the xp setup
after the format you can install the windows on the computer again right away.
you may need to get drivers for your computer ones the windows is installed again.
you will need to find the correct model from the bottom of your laptop, and the drivers are available on this page
From the description loo\ks like it's not a partition problem, but the Compaq CD. Try to partition Hard Drive using Windows 98 bootable CD. Try to install Win XP from different CD - doesn't have to be Compaq. Later you can download drivers.
The error means that the computer is not seeing the hard drive.Hit F10 to get into BIOS and check that your hard drive is showing . If it is hit ESC and tell it to save settings. Then restart the PC.
If your hard drive does not show in BIOS, there is something wrong with it. It may be co-incidental that canceling the scan caused your hard drive to fail.
You can try to do an XP repair. Boot your XP cd: When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your applications, it just reinstall the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe
This means that the data inside the D drive is gone. If you had deleted the D drive data or had gotten rid of this partition then your outta luck in trying to restore your system back to factory settings (getting windows reloaded).
All is not lost if you are willing to pay HP/Compaq for their restore CD's this will get your laptop and running again. I paid a copy of these CD's 3yrs ago and cost me $45CDN to get them.
Open and back all important if you could still open you hard disk drive in another media like flash disks or cards then reformat and reinstall your new OS. do not ctrl A and copy all files when your return them back rememember to scan them using powerful antivirus software before you return data to your newly reformatted HDD or else you may be copying the virus back. Have it cleaned by PC with updated Antivirus programs.
