I have the same problem, maxtor drive cannot be detected from my computer. Also, I haven't used it for a long time - and it ticks!

Bought a One Touch III Turbo (2TB), configured it as RAID 1. Ran one backup. Two days later tried to run another backup. Drive was not detected by system. Re-installed drivers, drive was detected. Ran backup. In middle of backup got error message "Delayed Write Failed..., Operation Terminated". Drive was making clicking noise. Powered everything off then on again. Drive not recognized, and making clicking noise.

I was in the drive business for 30 years, and this is an indication of drive failure. Didn't want to return drive as there was sensitive data on it from first backup. Took it apart and tested each drive. Sure enough one of the drives exhibited the clicking problem. It was toast!

Lot's of similar posts on web. Apparently this is a common failure with Maxtor/Seagate drives. There is a law firm that is soliciting information from users that have had this problem for a class action lawsuit. See the URL below:

    Lessons:
    1. Don't buy Maxtor/Seagate drives
    2. Back up using encryption so if you have to return you can do so safely

You have lost the drivers for it. Go to Maxtor's web site and search for the drivers download for the model you have then install them.

I have a Maxtor as well. Great external HD. You must go to www.maxtor.com and run new updated drivers for it. You said it has not been used in a while right? Then you deffently need to update it's drivers.

Driver does not install atomatically

With the computer off, plug the unit in to the computer and turn it on.

Now start the computer, there is no driver to install manually, windows
uses generic drivers to detect plug n play devise's.

Out of hundreds of computers, the only time I have not seen a hard
drive detected was because the hard drive was bad, and the others
where hacked versions of windows, called lite xp, or the chipset drivers
where not loaded because someone just installed windows but nothing else.

You can look through your bios for plug n play, but its probably set to auto.

Most external HD's take a while to be detected from 10 seconds up to a few minutes.

If the driver does not install automatically, what driver are you installing
that you get it to work ??????????????????????????

If the external hard disks is plugged to a USB port and is not detected anymore, try uninstalling the USB Root Hub devices in the device manager. They will automatically be reinstalled on reboot and that can help fix detection issues.

But did you look in the Disk Management module of Windows to see if the disk is there? Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

Hello,

all you have to do is to simply set the jumper at the back of he hard disk, beside where the IDE cable and power enter into the hard disk.

Just keep setting till you put at the right position where the system recognizes it.

There is nothing wrong with your PC and hard drive, just set the jumper of the Hard disk and that should be all.

Take care.

Can't detect an external Hard drive (Maxtor 1TB)

im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.

hope this will fixya....
