Hard drive caddy stuck

I have a dell inspirion 2600 and am trying to replace the hard drive. The hard drive caddy that is already installed in my laptop will only come out about 2 inches after I un-srew the retaining screw to insert a new hard drive.

Dell laptop HD

This model laptop came with a 60Gb hard drive and it will work with a 40Gb hard drive.
If it was me I would install a 60 Gb hard drive not a smaller one.

I just bought a Dell DHS computer without a harddrive at a yard sale, how do I install a hard drive for it

First you have to make sure you bought the right kind of hard drive (IDE or SATA) to make the installation and connection easier. IDE drives have a set of prongs or pins that stick out. SATA is the later type and does not have prongs or pins sticking out. You just turn the laptop over and remove the cover where the hard drive will be housed. Usually it will have an icon of 3 circular discs on it. Most laptops will also require a Caddy that the drive sits in before it goes into the laptop. And some might require a interface.

I suggest you look on ebay and see if your computer's make and model requires a hard drive caddy or interface.

http://www.ebay.com

In the search box just type your computer's make and model followed by hard drive caddy. Example: Dell Latitude D610 Hard Drive Caddy

In the search box type this is see if it requires an interface: Example: Dell Latitude D610 Hard Drive Interface

System says there is no hard drive. error code 0142 says hard drive error

This is what the manual says:
Replacing the Hard Drive caution.gif CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional safety best practices information, see the Regulatory Compliance Homepage at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance. notice.gif NOTICE: Hard drives are extremely fragile. Exercise care when handling the hard drive. notice.gif NOTICE: Use firm and even pressure to slide the hard drive into place. Excessive force may result in damage to the connector. This procedure assumes that you have completed the removal procedure Removing the Hard Drive.
  1. Slide the hard drive into the hard drive connector until the drive is fully seated.

  2. Replace the hard drive cover aligning the notches.

  3. Replace the two M2.5 x 8-mm screws to secure the cover.

  4. Install the operating system for your computer, as needed. For information on reinstalling the operating system, see the Setup and Quick Reference Guide for your computer on support.dell.com.

  5. Install the drivers and utilities for your computer, as needed. For information on reinstalling drivers and utilities, see the Setup and Quick Reference Guide for your computer on support.dell.com.
I would say that was a bit harsh and this is what I would do.
Insert your System disk and install a fresh system. During the installation, Windows should be clever enough to detect and format the drive.
If you remove the drive and with a caddy you could try to repair the system with another pc but you may get problems.
Hope this helps.

Dell inspirion 1525 will not boot upon power up...only displays locked 9 light solid

This is a Hard Drive error. If your unit is under one year old, you can get the drive replaced by Dell.
The drive can be accessed outside the laptop to retrieve the data, but it may fail all together very soon.
If you have no data on it, just get a new Hard drive installed. Dell should be able to replace the drive and start the system restore for you.

Hi I got a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The current HHD is the seagate momentus 5400.3 120g. This is now damaged. Can I use the Seagate Momentus 5400.6, 320 G, 5400 RPM SATA2. Will my laptop support the 320g...

Hello: I see no problem using a bigger harddrive in the unit, the only concern I think you might have is to purchase a hard drive caddy for the interface, Especially if the current hard drive is an IDE Interface, You can purchase a IDE to Sata Interface caddy, to support the drive Interface if it's an IDE format. You might want to check with Dell for compatibility first before purchasing the Sata Drive.
