Question about BenQ PB8220 Multimedia Projector

17 Answers

Benq pb 8220 Blue screen, no picture and will not show menu

O switching on, the fans run, the lamp lights and shows the Benq Logo, then it shows a blue screen, it will display the lamp life icon and that can be reset. But it will now show the menu, source or picture. I have tried different inputs, i.e. a pc, camcorder and game console but still no image.

Hope someone can help, Thanks

Thanks, but it will not show anything other than the lamp life monitor, it will not display menu or source icon or input images.

Will gladly accept anything else you could come up with!

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

sorry but i need more advice

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

Thanks but that was the first thing I did, and have reset counter to zero. But the problem is still the same, blue screen, no picture, no menu, no source icons.
    Thanks

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

I have e-mailed benq, but still waiting on a reply.
It was working fine, turned off then this. Have found out that lamp has not been changed, at all, so before I buy a new lamp, how do I know.
    Thanks

Am an electrician, have done that thanks

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

Thanks for the idea, will check tomorrow. But unit had been fixed to a ceiling so no knocks or bangs!
Why would lamp life meter show and not menu?
    Thanks for the idea though

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

Thanks for that was looking for a usb lead myself at the time.
Good idea, found a lead to suit, need firmware now. Would you need the projector switched on or off to reset?

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

Sorry but unit does not switch off nor are the led's flashing or staying on!

    Thanks

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

thanks looking at pres myself on the web. I have no cd , would be grateful If you managed to locate one.
    Thanks Will let you know

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

The projector does not state that the lamp needs replacing, it did state that there was 750hrs used before I reset it. I have just tried to connect it to an x-box and I now have audio, but still no picture.
    Thanks

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

I get the benq logo, so the default screen has not been changed, it is after that, the screen goes blue.
    Thanks

  • ecoulton Feb 06, 2009

    Hi thanks.
Have an X-Box connected to it at pres , have sound, lamp on, fans running, no red led's just showing blue screen. Have checked remote, the buttons not working are, exit, menu, auto, pip and freeze. All the rest do, how can I get Menu or source?

  • ecoulton Feb 07, 2009

It shows the benq warm up screen, then shows a blue screen only

  • ecoulton Feb 07, 2009

Good idea, how do I do that, with a blank blue screen? The menu does not show up using the button on the projector, or on the remote.

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

Thanks for tried connecting to a pc using the rgb socket but still no joy. How come the Benq warm up screen shows but not the picture?

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

Tried hooking up to an xbox console, still no good. Is there a reset button? or could it be frozen?

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

Stripped it down and cleaned all dust traps and given it a full service.
    Still the same i'm afraid!

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

That sounds a bit more feasible.
Is there a way to prove it's the board and
where could I obtain a new board from?

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

The lamp is lit and I have audio, just a blue screen

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

How do I check to see if its frozen?

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

    Thanks for the links.
    I have emailed Benq

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

Thanks for the comment about the lamp, but I don't understand how I get the Benq warm up screen though?
I don't want to buy a lamp and then find out that's it's not the lamp.

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

Thanks for the link, But I already have the manual, not that it much help.

  • ecoulton Feb 09, 2009

    Thanks Dan
Been the best solution provided so far, will see if I can locate a repair center.

Based upon the symptoms you describe, this is what is happening:

1) The default screen is the blue screen. This is displayed when there is no input. (First indication that the input is not being seen)
2) The menu screen is generated internally and is further along the video path than the inputs. (This means that the input board is probably OK)
3) If you continue to get only blue, than the video processing section is faulty. This is AFTER the character generator and menu sections. This section is not considered a user replaceable section as it resides on the main board.

The main board contains all of the particular information about your sepcific projector including all of the convergence and alighment information set at the factory. Convergence and alignment requires specialized equipment.

Unfortunately, this is not a problem that can be solved by the user. This unit must be sent to an authorized service center for repair.

The input board has failed.

The benQ logo and menu are loaded into prom, so there is no input signal necessary to show those items.

BenQ uses proprietary circutry, so you would need to call them for repair/replacement parts.

Related problem needs the unit clean once you have a "dust blobs"

better reassemble the unit and clean the lens,

this few steps gives you an idea on How to clean the unit;

  1. Underside of the projector. you can find the filter under the hatch on the left side, lamp is under the hatch on the right rear.de of the projector.
  2. Filter hatch opened and fan bracket removed. Filter is gray foam in lower left. Clean the filter with canned air or wash and dry thouroughly before replacing.
  3. Clean the projecter using a canned air.
  4. Hold the unit vertically to avoid any liquid get inside of the parts
  5. On the LCD and polarizer area. You've got to blow out all the crevices in this area, using care not to scratch or dislocate anything.

All done!

Hi

Try using a different signal cable. If that doesnt work then

that means that your Projector's Ballast ( lamp's powersupply ) is faulty.

It is quite cheap to have replaced.

Unplug the projector from power, and also the computer (or whatever device connected.

Now connect projector to computer with both units unplugged or not powered.

Restart computer first , with VGA cable connected to projector.

Start projector as second.

If computer is a laptop you will have to switch signal to external port.

Testing with a desktop is better, because you always have signal on VGA/HDMI port.

If the above does not work, do the opposite, power off both , then start first PC, then projector.

If it does not work both ways, then it is probably a defective signal board on projector.

Beg your pardon, but if the "The menu does not show up" at all, then the problem is not with the input.

The Menu is displayed by the projector even when no device is connected.

The projector is defective, with an internal problem, this is not a repair that you can do at home, it may be a blown component on main board or something similar.

Hello, I work for a school district and have alot of Projector work orders that im not supposed to do ( not my department) But i do anyways.

I didt read everyones post so sorry if i repeat a few things.

Usually this issue is do to something being connected but not ouputting a signal to the projector.

On the remote ther should be a INPUT button that allows you to switch from say, RGB1 to RGB2 then maybe DIGITAL INPUT or some other external like A/V.

Be sure that the connectors are of course, connected right. Should go from the OUTPUT of whatvers hooks to the projector, and connect to the INPUT on the projector.

You probably did this already but im just going through the check list.

Now, Make sure ther isnt any sort setting thats got it on freez frame or something and its locked on a blue picture. Try resetting the projector, Just unplug it for about a minnute or 2.

Also, test the output device ( I.E. Camera, P.C.) on some thing like a T.V. to be sure it works and its all the Projectors fault that ts not working.

Does it have an AUTO detect? for the dignals or do you set it yourself/manually?

Is thee any red status lights blinking?

I found the manual online in case you need it. Its a PDF at the below link

http://www.aboutprojectors.com/pdf/benq-pb8220-manual.pdf

Hope that help some.

This sounds like a main board failure. unfortunately these malfunctions can only be repaired or rebuilt by the manufacture. the on board software could also have become corrupt as well.

Your problem may be on one side of the board. im thinking its the input side. you may have breakage there. i would check the solder connections on the input side of this board. you could have a hairline crack not noticeable by the naked eye. hope that helps.

Press EXIT button for five sec. you see counter hrs. then press AUTO button to reset .
you hit menu and then hold exit for 3 seconds to bring up the lamp hours used, then you push menu on either the remote or the console and then you hit < or > to reset it. You just have to hold exit for 3 seconds on the console and not the remote and it works just fine.

Disconnect all inputs to the BENQ and power on. Do the lights come on as per normal operation. Does the lamp come on when the power button is pressed. Does anything show when the menu is selected.

I have not used my PB6100 for a little while and when I tried to run it I only had a plain screen. I could not even get the menu to show. The lamp had less than 300 hours at the previous showing.

George - I have a similar problem. Low light output, no blue screen, or BENQ power up - nothing but low light being projected. Did you solve your problem? Same as you we have not used the projector for a few months. TIA Jim

My benq projector turns on for a few minutes (light and fan going strong), then it shuts down.

if it goes through shut down mode (lamp first and fans run a while), reset the settings to factory default. while you're in the menu, check the lamp hours (under settings). if they're close to 2000 hours, replace the lamp. if the projector shuts down immediately, fans and all, you have a power supply problem. you'll need to replace it.

Blue screen

Hi Guys,

I recently struck this issue with one of our PB6100's. To resolve I did the following:
  1. Enter service menu (found on AVForums): PRESS AND HOLD UP BUTTON UNTIL LAMP HOURS ARE DISPLAYED, PRESS THE POWER AND BLANK BUTTONS TOGETHER
  2. Under the Fan menu select "More Options". You should then be in the "Fac7 Submenu".
  3. Select "Hard Reset". Note that this will reset the lamp hours also!
  4. Power off & then on again. Test input.

The above worked for me. Hope it helps.
