the best and easiest way to upgrade the firmware on your wii is to connect the wii to your internet and look for system update in the system settings and update that way. Altthough most games that need newer firmware come with the update installed on the disc, normally once you insert the disc it will tell you it need to update the system firmware in order for the game to work, so i'm not sure why this is not happening for you if your new games not playing. The only thing i can think of if it's not updating automatically is that the wii has been chipped/modded in some way, has it? If it has'nt just connect the wii to the internet you should be able to update it that way.
Hope that helps
Here's how I fixed mine. When I got the message stating that the
download was unsuccessful I went into settings, then network, and I
tested my network connection. During a network test it automatically
logs your profile out, but when the test came back good, before it
logged my profile back in, it asked me to update again. I hit "a" to
accept the update and it worked this time.
make sure you dont have firmware version 3.0 if you do you need to upgrade it version 3.0 broke alot of games but luckily a few days later 3.01 came out to fix this. I would just goto system update and see if there is a new version available and install that before you start diggin to much into this problem.
have you upgraded recently version 3.0 broke alot of games but luckely they game out with 3.01 a couple of days later if you dont already have 3.01 goto system update and update it i dont think it was a required update so may have to accually goto system update to find it.
Okay im not 100% sure but you might of had a bad upgrade if that is possible or just encountered a small problem whilst a system update, installation was being done. Now there might be some justice for you yet, if your ps3 system is updated to 2.50 then you should be able to get into a menu that lets you reset your ps3 to an original safe backed up state, to do this you have to hold the ps3 on button on the console until you hear 2 beeps in this order one BEED two BEEP then BEEP BEEP the 2 beeps together are when you can let go, then connect your ps3 controller to the ps3 through usb, now you have a couple of different options if your ps3 is not updated past 2.50 its worth updating it now, and if it is updated and you have this problem still then i suggeust you restore your ps3, you might lose friends on your ps3, messages and saved data but this will completely refresh your ps3 to an original state,
