If you have the sound driver for your laptop, try to reinstall it.

Also, check if you have the volume controller icon appearing in the system tray (desktop-bottom right) and check if the sound and speaker control are not in mute.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might...

Can you hear the Windows Startup/Logon/Shutdown/Logoff sound? If not, there must be problem with the Sound Drivers. Please check the sound settings from the Control Panel (in your case, i don't think the sound icon is shown on the taskbar). Open the sound settings and try to adjust the volume level, if the sliders don't work, then you need to reinstall the sound driver.

Let's hope this isn't a hardware problem and so I would conclude that reinstalling the Sound Driver will definitely fix your problem.

Good luck

Thanks for using FixYa.

Dvd rom will play cd with sound it will play dvd with/out sound

Well the good news then is that its not a hardware problem, it is most likely one of the issues below:
1- Vista muted the player that you are using: Launch the player and then at the bottom right corner by the time click on the volume control and select mixer. It should list all the programs you have open. In vista you can mute a selected program, make sure all programs are not muted
2- The volume control is turned down on the Toshiba laptop: On Toshiba laptops there is a volume dial control located either on the front or around the sides, make sure that it is not turned down. play a song and try adjusting it both ways
3- Conflict with another Video/Audio Player : Un-install any newly added media software.

Sound card won't work with external input

Are you trying to record and listen at the same time? It doesn't usually work that way, the computer has to process and encode the audio signals before they can be listened to. Once you restore the computer, are you able to listen to the recording? If you have onboard sound, rather than a separate sound card, all the audio processing is done by your CPU. If you are trying to listen to the audio as it is being recorded, you are probably overloading the capabilities of the device and its shutting itself down. Try to record without listening. Also make sure you have the latest drivers. If it is onboard audio, check the manufacturer's website for updates. If you know that it is Realtek AC 97 (probably says so your manual), you can download new drivers from the Realtek website.
