Linksys Wireless G adapter: yes connection; can't launch browser

My linksys WPC54G wireless G ver 1.2 adapter card [2.4 GHz, 802.11g] running in a windows 98SE environment (in Dell inspiron laptop) indicates that it's retrieving an excellent signal from my router, but I can't launch any browser (e.g., with Firefox 2.0.0.12, I get message saying "server not found"). I have no problem when when I connect my laptop to the router via ethernet cable (connection setting: "auto-detect proxy settings for this network"; no problem with launching Firefox). No problem with launching browsers on second laptop (running Vista) with wireless connection to this router.

Any suggestions re: possible causes/solutions?

Thanks.

    Yes, this seems like the most sensible thing to do!

    Thanks

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A couple of ideas/tries:

  • does the wireless device show in 'Device Manager';
  • have you tried 'Static IP Address' on the 98 machine;
  • in 'Internet Options' (Control Panel), Connections tab, LAN Settings button, check 'Automatically detect Settings'.
Give the above a try and post back results. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Shut down the PC, disconnect power from your Modem, and your Router. Then Power on the Modem, then the router, then start the PC and see if you can surf the web with your favorite Browser (mine's FireFox).

    Explanation: Connecting a new device will sometimes require initial flushing of the DNS and all should be well with that PC afterward unless you have the problem again.

    Though the Operating System (OS) you're running are obsolete and haven't been supported by Microsoft in years (no security updates whatsoever, very unsafe surfing), so it makes all of the sense in the world to at least upgrade to Win 2000 (still supported) or XP to be safe.

Yes, you are running Windows 98 SE. Upgrade to ME and you will probably be OK. Upgrade to Win2K and you will be OK.

How to find more wifi connections with my Linksys WPC54G? I can get connections (sometimes) but would like to find more options (stronger connections).

Upgrade the drivers for the adapter for better connectivity , excellent signal strength and enhance performance.Go the following link:-
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WPC54G/download
and under select hardware version select the latest one from there , in this case it will be v7.1.
After selecting the v7.1 download the driver associated and enlisted below which will be Ver.4.1.2.95.

How can i connect to enternet f i have a linksys wireless g notebook adapter with model no. WPC54g ver. 2

hi

this is a connector to the laptop and now you'll need a source...

a source can be a service provider with wireless connection or a free hotspots or

a home based wired internet connection with wireless router

if you have a wireless router then you may have to call the ISP for the DNS server settings if any required but for others i think the auto IP configuration settings should work fine

cheers
pls rate if this was any help

Linksys wireless notebook adapter 2.4 GHz??

Since your Toshiba has a wireless card built in, you wont derive much benefit from using it.

It is basically there for people who don't have built in wireless cards.
