Under cabinet light not working

Replaced the bulbs - 2 21" warm flourescents only to have both bulbs very dull...they are much duller than what had been there. No clue on how to fix this - any hints

oh, and I tried about 3 bulbs that I bought at OSH today...could it be defective bulbs?

how do you figure out how to replace the starter or transformer? I just went and bought two new bulbs and the problem still exits. I assume its the unit and I need to figure out what to fix...

Probably not defective bulbs. Flourescents use either a starter and transformer or a ballast. When lights are weak, could be either. Very simple to change too. One other thing, could be connections that go into the lamp holders. If not good connections, light will be dim. On a stretch, if unit is located in an area that us lower than about 50 degrees, this could cause them to be dim. Check ratings on ballast/ starter and transformer. Finally, if voltage is either too high or too low, this could be a dimming problem too. If it has worked in the past, and this is a current problem, then chances are it's not the voltage but may want to check it anyway to eliminate that possibility.

sorry I took so long to get back but I am having some trouble with this site.

I am assuming that power is going throught the off/on switch. With that assumtion, it can only be a loose wire at one of the lamp holders or the start/ transformer or ballast.

After checking the unit for loose wires and as a rule of thumb, you would change the starter first, if it has one, as they are only a few bucks and can be bought just about anywhere. If that doesn't do it, go for the transformer. If the unit has a ballast, just change it. Once again after check for loose wires and power going through the switch.

When I switch my mixer on it goes to full speed

If it is a Kitchen Aid mixer I would suspect the little pcb with 4 wires coming out of it under the rear cover at the top.
If it is not a Kitchen Aid you will need to supply more clues.

BHG stand mixer only runs 10 seconds

It sounds like a thermal fuse (circuit breaker). The fuse is tripping nice it gets warm (or the mixer is stresses). These mixers don't have ball bearings, they have bushings that are oil impregnated from the factory. The oil eventually dries out or hardens if flour or other contaminants get in there. The bearings could be siezed to some degree and make the motor difficult to turn, and cause the fuse to trip.

Make sure you can easily turn it by hand (when unplugged). If you cannot, you will need to fix the cause. Or replace it if cheap enough.

My mixer just started smoking while i was mix some

Your mixer may still be good, let it cool down and then check it out, If it runs OK then there is no problem. The motor in your mixer probably over heated from trying to mix bread dough which will make any mixer work hard. These mixers will get warm when over worked but unless heavy smoke was coming out and you were getting a burning enamel smell it is probably OK. Let it cool and try it but I suggest you not use it for bread any more.
