First off you should know that laptop fans have three speeds high, low, and off. When you first turn a laptop on it will start on high/low (depending on brand) and after a short time will turn off, it may not turn on again for a while. i have had some that will not make it to the desktop without the fan and i had on that was running for several month straight without the fan plugged in (i don't recommend doing this, it was a mistake burned it, reached 70 degrees C).

I would like you to first download Speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan437.exe and install it. once installed leave your computer completely off for at least 1 hour. then turn on your computer and once you get to the desktop run speed fan make note of the temps. leave this opened and now use you computer normally for a little bit then come back to speed fan after a while and make note of those temps. once you have done this if you post them in a reply so i can verify if the fan is bad or if it is something else.

My gateway nv5207u turns on laods windows, gets to desktop screen and then shuts off, about a minute every time than its off, then i need to press the power botton again, any clue?

You laptop is overheating. Check whether you are hearing the sound of processor fan working and check the bottom of the laptop where processor fan is located getting heated. If yes, you need to take that to a technician

Please advise on how to remove the heat sink fan of a Gateway MX6920 laptop. Thanks.

Please download and follow official gateway disassembly instructions found at:

http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/BladeC/1009030ul.shtml

It should guide you through the disassembly process to a point where removing the fan should be no problem.

If you do not feel comfortable with electronics please contact a service center and have a pro do it for you.

Best of luck.

Gateway 7330gz will only run few seconds then turn off

Remove the battery and run off of the A/C power adapter without the battery installed.

If it works, the battery is just discharged too much. After Windows settles, insert the battery and let it charge.

Hp pavilion zd8000, has a problem with the graphic card; the fan went dead that on top of graphic card, so when I turn system on, after a few Minutes the screen start to lost image. Do I need to replace...

if the computer works fine for the first few minutes without the fan spinning, you probably only need to replace the fan. when the image is fading, do you get lots of flashy colors? that's mostly a sign of graphics overheating...

My gateway mx6920 keeps freezing if I let it sit for more then 15-20 minutes. If I start it in safe mode it does not do it. does anyone have any ideas?

does your screen saver go in after 15-20 minutes ? because if so then you might try disable it and check if it freezes. does it also freeze when you are using it or when its idle ?

Overheating

Overheating is a big issue with Gateway. It mostly involves problems with the fan. When Gateway receives a warranty fan problem they replace it with a fan that is reconditioned or rebuilt (probably from another cutomer's unit like yours) and they don't seem to last long. To make sure it is a fan problem, which is the most common, Turn on the laptop and wait to see if the fan is turning on. It won't take long, processors get hot quick. The fan should turn on and run anywhere from 3 to 15 seconds then turn off. It should do this approx every 5 to 7 minutes in order to keep the processor cool. If it doesn't work at all, works seeming sporadically, or the processor gets really hot before the fan starts, then it's a fan problem, and a NEW fan should be purchased. If the fan works properly, then it could be that the fan and heat sink need to be cleaned internally due to dust build up.

Notebook Fan or Hard Drive Dead

when you leave it for a while will it start, If it dose dose the cpu fan work if so then It's not your fan, But if it shuts down after a short time it could be that it is over heating, That could be because the fan is not seated properly or heat sink is blocked
