Question about Toshiba 40H80 40" Rear Projection Television

Toshiba 40H80 Rear Projection TV Picture Rolling/Scrolling

Our friends gave us this TV a year ago because they said the picture would keep "rolling" (no vertical hold). We've used it now for a year and the problem has just started happening for us. At random times, the picture just starts to "roll" vertically. Sometimes switching the power on and off quickly several times via the switch on the surge protector that it's plugged into fixes the problem. Sometimes not. But the issue has been getting more frequent in the past couple of weeks. We just got a Wii last week and whenever we try plugging the Wii into the TV, it seems to set off the vertical scrolling immediately (though this could just be a coincidence -- the Wii has worked perfectly on the set a few times, too).

Is this worth calling a repair technician in to fix? Do you think this TV too old to be worth fixing? Any help you could suggest would be most appreciated!

Thank you!

Identical problem. I just called a repair center and he said that it's a component level problem and on a set that old, repairs are too costly. Basically, toss the box!

Sound, No Picture

The only thing you can do is to unplug the tv for 30 min. Then turn it back on and see if that fixed it. If not call a repair man, you are most likely missing a power supply voltage or deflection voltage.

it sounds as if it is solder related, bur hard to say for sure. You ay need a service manual to actually trouble shootthe power supply and opeating circuits. I will post a lnk where you can get a service manual emailed to you

Vertical Rolling picture

Vertical IC, caps or the hyper board would be my guess. None of which you can do yourself without some serious electronics experience. You'll need to ESR test the caps in the vertical circuit first, then move-on to static testing the vertical IC. If either of these are the problem it's not too expensive. The Hyper Module is a different story, usually only replaceable as a module but you can also send them in for rebuild to PTS Electronics.

Picture is Rolling..stops after some warm-up

I have seen this many times. There is a 9 volt regulator on the small signal board that causes this. The regulator goes bad and the 9 volts starts dropping, especially at start-up when the regulator is cold. If the voltage is below 8 volts then the picture gets dark and the vertical becomes unstable, with the picture squeezing down and/or rolling. As the regulator warms up the voltage starts rising back towards 9 volts and the symptoms start clearing up. There are 3 regulators in a row on the board and the regulator in the middle is always the bad one. Replacing that regulator should cure your problems but it should be replaced by someone experienced in servicing Mitsubishi projection TV's because pulling the chassis out is quite tricky.
