Disconnect the speaker wires from the speaker terminals of the amplifier. Also disconect the RCA cables from the amp. If the amp still goes into protect, the amplifier likely has shorted output transistors.

I'm assuming that you've confirmed that the power/remote/ground connections are intact.

I have the same amp I just bought off e-bay not working. It's what I do. I buy amps that don't work then repair them and resale. Anyway mine did the same thing and your problem is shorted output transistors. Find which ones and replace. But, since this is a 1 channel amp you will want to replace all the output transistors. Make sure the replacements are from same manufactuer, same date code/ batch number. It's better to have transistors that are from the same batch cause mixed transistors can have little variations that might cause problems later on. Good luck and let me know. I will help you if you need more help.

Sounds to me like the amp is going into protection mode. Try placing one sub on the amp with very little gain. One of the biggest reason why this happens is because the subwoofers are wired wrong. What is the brand and model number for your amp?

Amp will not come back on

Try moving the ground wire back where it was and see if it works again. Most likely you have a bad ground. Try grounding your amplifier to your back seat mounting bolts if all possible. Try scraping the location 'til you see metal before you ground your amp as well. Hope this helps!

My sony xplod 1000w xm-1652z doesnt work anymore

First off, according to the manual, the protect light should be green. That's normal operation. If it is red, that's a problem.

If it does go red, disconnect all of the wiring to the amp except the +12V and ground. Short the remote connection to the +12V to force the amp on. If the protect light still lights red, the issue is inside the amp and will need repair. If the issue goes away, try reconnecting one wire at a time until the protect light goes red again.

Overhaul light (red) stays on!

This is not a ovehaul light. It is called the protect indicator. It kicks in when the amp detects a fault on it's output. Disconnect the speaker / sub. Power up the amp and see if the light goes out. If it does you Sub is toast and needs to be replaced. If it stays on then the amp is done.

Amp staying in protection mode

No, this amp is not a heavy power consumer- matter of fact it takes very little power to run.Maybe you should check the fuses on the amp to see if they are what is recommended. Also check your fuse kit to your amp- your fuse might not be big enough. If neither works take it back where u got it.
