HP J6480 Fax Problems both Sending and Receiving...

My HP machine has a dedicated phone line with no other extras. My provider is Comcast and their techician checked my line and found that it was clear of any static or other interference.

My problem is that the HP machine will not consistently allow me to send or receive faxes error free. If I have more that 3 pages to send, it will almost always fail to transmit without and error occuring.

The instructions stated to slow the fax speed down...I did this with no improvement. I have run the self test and the feedback is that everything is set up properly.

Any suggestions?

Comcast is lying to you. Fax machines are ANALOG devices and will not work reliably on DIGITAL phone lines.

There is nothing wrong with your modem. Comcast charges extra for a second line. Depending on your model of fax machine, there should be both an input ond an output on the back of the fax machine. Plug the fax machine into line 1 on the modem. Then, plug your phone into the input on the back of the fax machine. If you fax does not have both in and out, then you can purchase a "Y" phone line adapter from your local electronics store.

ps. VoIP is a digital line... Facsimiles are analog signals... Sending analog signals over digital lines is not recomended. If you are wondering "why?" (and understand tech jargon) VoIP is sent via UDP, which is a connectionless protocol (does not retransmit dropped packets) Fax machines use TCP, which does resend dropped packets. This variance in Qualiy of Service sometimes cases strange activity such as both lines (sending and receiving) dropping connections, faxes taking a long time to transmit (due to constant resending loops), etc. It does work... kind of. I would just not assume that faxes made it to their destination until it gets confirmed.

My faxes will not receive because of communication errors


Hi,

Scenario 1

In the HP Solution Center, click Settings, point to Fax Settings & Setup,
and then click Fax Setup Wizard.

After you have connected the phone cord to the port labeled 1-LINE, run the
fax test again to make sure it passes and the HP All-in-One is ready for faxing.
Try to send or receive a test fax.
Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One. If you
do not use the supplied phone cord to connect from the telephone wall jack
to the HP All-in-One, you might not be able to send or receive faxes. After
you plug in the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One, run the fax test
again.
If you are using a phone splitter, this can cause faxing problems. (A splitter is
a two-cord connector that plugs into a telephone wall jack.) Try removing the
splitter and connecting the HP All-in-One directly to the telephone wall jack.

Scenario 2

If you are not using a distinctive ring service, check to make sure that the
Distinctive Ring feature on the HP All-in-One is set to All Rings. For
information, see Change the answer ring pattern for distinctive ringing.
? If Auto Answer is set to Off, you will need to receive faxes manually;
otherwise, the HP All-in-One will not receive the fax. For information on
receiving faxes manually, see Receive a fax manually.
? If you have a voice mail service at the same phone number you use for fax

The HP All-in-One might be dialing too fast or too soon. You might need to
insert some pauses in the number sequence. For example, if you need to
access an outside line before dialing the phone number, insert a pause
following the access number. If your number is 95555555, and 9 accesses
an outside line, you might insert pauses as follows: 9-555-5555. To enter a
pause in the fax number you are typing, press Redial/Pause, or press the
Space (#) button repeatedly, until a dash (-) appears on the display.
You can also send the fax using monitor dialing. This enables you to listen to
the phone line as you dial. You can set the pace of your dialing and respond
to prompts as you dial. For more information, see Send a fax using monitor
dialing.
? The number you entered when sending the fax is not in the proper format or
the receiving fax machine is having problems. To check this, try calling the
fax number from a telephone and listen for fax tones. If you cannot hear fax
tones, the receiving fax machine might not be turned on or connected, or a

Can't receive fax's......how do you set it up to receive...thank you

Faxing and receiving faxes


Hi, are you using the phone cord that came with your printer? If so, try a different cord if you have one. Can you plug a regular phone into that wall jack - does that work (dial-tone)? Are you using VOIP (like Comcast triple play), DLS or regular analog telephone service? If VOIP you may need to slow down your fax machine settings. Let me know how you make out. Good luck!

You have to have either a dedicated phone line just for the fax --or-- pay your phone company approximately $2 a month for a service called Distinctive Ringtone. This service will ring a certain way when you have an incoming fax. You will then configure your fax machine to pick up when this distinctive rington is heard. The ringtone is usually two or three quick rings. Your fax machine's settings will have this setting.

Unfortunately, you can't just plug your fax machine into your phone line and start sending/receiving faxes. Look through your fax machine's manual regarding the distinctive ring service. Good luck!!

the 5610 will send & recive with comcast try to do the test from the unit itself. Try to send a test fax to HP 1-888-473-2963 it will send you a return fax

keep the window closed ok? that's more along the lines of the phone issues, than the fax machine itself..there are many ways to outwit the phone tree issues, but each number would need to be encoded directly.

solution?

get a dedicated inexpensive fax machine, or use efax.com

Brother Intellifax 770 fax machine failure to receive faxes


I get calls all the time about fax issues. I work for Comcast and have guided people to the right answers about third party devices. We use a digital connection. Analog is a dying medium. Most calls are concerning HP and Brother but I know others fax machines have had problems too. The new HP machines have a digital setting. HP is aware of digital issues and can help you. It is unfortunate that old fax machines are not digital but a new fax is inexpensive if you wish to buy one. Analog takes up too much space. An example: Six digital television channels can fit in the same space (bandwidth) as one analog. That is why the FCC mandated the change. The same goes for phone lines. I Google almost every problem concerning fax machines and if you go past all the upset comments you will get to the comments that offer remedy. I also wanted everyone to know that a second, no frills fax line from Comcast is very inexpensive and our way of offering a dedicated fax line intead of a distinctive ring fax option.
