Question about Kenmore 24 in. 17483 Built-in Dishwasher

Kenmore Elite 17483 Dishwasher Caught Fire!

Our 3 1/2 year old Kenmore dishwasher is apparently manufactured by Whirlpool, serial number FR3305103, Model 665.17483300, Type No. 577-0.

Last night, acrid-smelling smoke started coming from the front door, and now the dishwasher does not work.

This first link is for an official recall of dishwashers similar to this one, but with a plastic body (ours has a metal body and a stainless steel front):

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml05/05123org.html
This link is for Whirlpool's official recall:
https://www.whirlpool.com/repair/index.jsp?id=R14165

https://www.whirlpool.com/repair/index.jsp?id=R14165..

Apparently, even though our dishwasher's serial and part numbers fall within the range given on both pages, it is not covered in the recall, perhaps because it has a metal body.

The defect with our dishwasher seems exactly like the one described in the recall. We are going to attempt to have Whirlpool repair or replace ours for free, since this is not a natural malfunction due to the age of the appliance or for any other reason.

We will report back after we see what Whirlpool says tomorrow (Monday)...

Just had a Whirlpool affiliated technician come over (this Kenmore is really just a Whirlpool with the Sears brand name). The service call was $118, non-refundable. Our dishwasher originally cost us $1,048.10, including all taxes, and delivery. I know, that's expensive, but we thought we were getting the best, something that would last for a while, maybe ca. 10 years. We bought this on 9/11/04, it lasted four years, four months. Little did we know...

The technician's tally for replacing the parts comes out to ca. $400. After calling Sears, they said that they could either offer Service Parts up to $100 OR Service labor up to $150, One or the other, but not both. Obviously, this is not cost efficient.

I am attaching a picture of the burned out inside of the electronics panel on the front door of the dishwasher. Notice the charred insides.

What have we learned from this?

1. As the technician recommended, ALWAYS purchase the largest warranty, and then when it's about to expire, purchase an extension. Once your warranty expires, you have absolutely no recourse whatsoever, even if your place burns down.

2. Sears service is abysmal.

3. Whirlpool products are cheaply-made, and according to the Whirlpool affiliated technician, they are getting worse. (She admitted that she's so dismayed by the quality of modern dishwashers that she doesn't even own one, she washes by hand.)

4. It's a crapshoot purchasing what you think will be a top-of-the-line, excellent appliance. As they say, they just don't make them like they used to.

Finally, if there are others out there who purchased the same dishwasher and had the same problem, PLEASE post here. If enough people have this problem, there will inevitable be a recall of this batch of serial numbers in this model.

Really? I'll try that. I contacted a general number and spoke to someone not in the legal dept., and he said I had no recourse.
    It's worth a try...

  • Robert Paterson Feb 06, 2009

Thanks MrMark, your suggestion is right on. We'll do that. It's incredible to me that they wouldn't understand that customer satisfaction will lead to us actually recommending their products, but instead, we're ranting online. It would seem that good press we would have dished out online would be worth the few hundred dollars it would have taken.

I believe I have the same problem. Trying to contact Whirlpool. Kenmore Elite 665.16469300 purchased 6/14/04. Same burnt smell, water at bottom and control panel has no power. A few wires look like they have been burnt. I replaced the thermal fuse, no luck. After researching more I'm seeing this problem.

Had the exact same problem (Control panel burning up, sparking, and smoking during wash cycle) last night with our Kenmore Elite DW model 665.16293400 purchased Nov. 2004. I have reported it to the CPSC and www.kitchenaidfire.com and will be contacting Sears first thing tomorrow. It is outrageous that this problem is apparently so widespread with nothing being done about it! I have no doubt my kitchen would have been in flames if I had not been sitting right here to shut off power to the D/W.

As a follow-up, I wrote to Sears corporate office with details and photos of the incident. I received a call from someone in their executive offices within a couple of weeks. They offered me a 25% discount off a new dishwasher if I purchased from Sears plus free installation. I debated (mostly because I really did not want to deal with Sears again), but in the end it was the best deal I could find anywhere on a new D/W. Keeping my fingers crossed that this one has better luck than the last one.

Replacement circuit board is same model - same problem!!! We have a 3 year service coverage. Have never needed service coverage for 40 years of appliance ownership in 8 homes! It is essential now.

KitchenAId model kudp01flss5 Just started a wash cycle and went back to watching tv. Smelled smoke and ran into the kitchen to see smoke bellowing from the door of the dishwasher. I opened the door to shut her down but it continued to run so we flipped the circuit breaker. (on its own breaker) called customer service and they are sending out a tech to inspect it ... bought in 11/01/04 thank god i was home and awake. the scary part is that my wife usually loads it and goes to bed after working all night... Other problems I have had with this model include the springs that hold the door continually break and the water pump

Well, our model just melted out (665.xxx) and we bought in 04/05 the smoke was so bad that I spent the night in ER sucking on O2 from the fumes. I think I may go bosch and skip the whole maytag/kenmore/sears/whilrpool rebranding mess. There is only one bosch.

I have a Kenmore Elite Dishwasher model 665.17489300. It is about 5 years old and the control circuit board has caught on fire. The relays on the board melted and caught on fire. Luckily my kids were home to turn the unit off and turn the breaker off.
This is obviously a dangerous situation and I have learned that the incident should be reported to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission at 800-638-2772. If enough people report the problem then a recall can be issued.

I had the exact same problem yesterday. We bought our Kennmore Elite model 665.16269400 in November 04, and yesterday it began smoking. It had a terribly strong electrical smell. We unscrewed the cover and found a burned electrical board. Sears wants $205 to fix it, including parts and a one-year warranty. The parts department says that the board, alone, is $99. I don't trust the repair. After reading all of these posts, I think I'll contact Whirlpool ...

Same problem
Don't recall when we purchased this dishwasher, but probably '04, '03. Had the exact same problem today (March 6, 2010).

While running, smoke started pouring out of the front panel. Smelled liked an electrical fire, so I ran downstairs and flipped the circuit breaker. Then took off the front panel. Sure enough -- The circuit board caught fire. Thank heavens I was home while the machine was running.

Wish I'd seen this site before I bought another Kenmore elite. our old model 16469300,purchased Sept 15,2004 started malfunctioning 2 months ago. Sears repair diagnoised the problem as a bad circuit board and wanted $144 for the board and $175 to install it. I cleaned the contacts for a month before that didn't anymore. Thought I might replace the board with one from repair clinic and give it to a friend but guess I'll dump it instead.

The dishwasher, 665-1605xxxx caught fire on 9/10/2010. The unit was purchased 2/18/2005. After multiple calls to Sears, I would have to pay for their tech to look at the unit.

I have found that tactfully contacting Whirlpool legal department get's action when it comes to fire and health safety issues.

  • Mark Egan Feb 05, 2009

The approach to use is an email to their customer service department indicating the problem that you had, with supporting documentation from a qualified repair person (unless you can prove that you are, which I could do), and that with reference to the recall notice, you feel that you and your family were fortunate enough to avoid harm or catastrophe. And that you would like to know if that when this unit is repaired, that you or your family will be as fortunate.

Don't threaten, you won't get anywhere. Don't demand a new unit, you probably won't get it if you ask. Just let them know that it is apparent that they know they have a problem (the recall notice) and you would hate for their unit to be the cause for irepairable harm, should there be a next time.

Last nigh my Maytag dishwasher model # MDB7100Aww serial # 15666931YM caught fire. Luckily I heard it and was able to put the fire out before my house caught fire. Has there been a recall on this model...

Hi,

Yes, there was a product recall for your Dishwasher due to fire hazard. Please visit the following pages for further information:

https://repair.maytag.com/repair/dishwasher.jsp?siteCd=MT_EN_US

https://repair.maytag.com/repair/dish_faq.jsp?siteCd=MT_EN_US

The list includes model numbers beginning MDB7 with serial numbers ending in YM, so yours is one of the units affected.

With regard to repair / replacement / compensation, Maytag state the following:

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it and inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire. Contact Maytag for either a free in-home repair, or a $75 cash back reimbursement following the purchase of a new Maytag®, Jenn-Air®, Whirlpool® or KitchenAid® dishwasher. Consumers should not return the dishwasher to the retailer where it was purchased, as retailers are not prepared to take units back.
Consumer Contact: For more information, contact Maytag Corporation at (800) 675-0535 anytime, or visit the firm's Web site at www.repair.maytag.com.

Hope this helps - I would advise phoning them on the number above to find out what your exact position is as this recall was issued in 2007. However, there should not be any time limitations on claims and this still appears to be an active recall. They have admitted the dishwashers are dangerous and thereby accepted liability.

Regards,
BElectric

This just happened to our Kenmore Elite -- just as I was about to go to bed I smelled fumes and went downstairs to our kitchen and saw thick smoke and smelled awful fumes. I will contact Sears/Whirlpool...

You WERE VERY LUCKY, indeed. Thank goodness.
With a problem that indeed causes fire and burning, I ,myself wouldn't get it repaired, if i was in a position to repair or replace, i would replace with a nice new one, with a warranty, and, also, it is less likely to have a repeat of what has happened due to the newer technology.
Nothing that "Smells" in the electrical world is cheap...
also if you do anything get a "Quote" first before you start any repair.

MODEL duiioixtpq3 ser. # fs0201257 will not run, no lights on anywhere. how old is this dishwasher?

The model number is actually "DU1101XTPQ3". If the model number you listed this question under is correct, there is a thermal fuse located inside the control panel of the dishwasher. The part number for the thermal fuse replacement is 8193762.

If you type in your model number you can utilize the exploded view parts diagrams at pcappliancerepair.com, appliancepartspros.com or searspartdirect.com to assist you in locating the part. The fuse is listed as item 6 under the "Control Panel Parts" section.

To replace the fuse, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the dishwasher is unplugged or the breaker is turned off.

2. Open the door and remove only the top screws directly behind the control panel.

3. Remove the protective cover from back of the control panel to expose the main control board.

The thermal fuse should be mounted to the control board. If you remove it and take a resistance check, it should read close to 0 ohms, if good. If bad, replace as necessary. Make sure you follow the installation instructions on the replacement fuse.

The age of the appliance is determined by the SERIAL NUMBER. The following link explains how this is determined on Whirlpool manufactured appliances:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3576437-determining_the_age_of_your_whirlpool_ap

The SECOND DIGIT in the serial number determines the YEAR it was manufactured. The first TWO NUMBERS following that digit, represents the WEEK (52 weeks in a year) that it was manufactured. So...if I'm reading your serial number correctly, this dishwasher was manufactured January 2005.

If you have any questions about this repair, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you

What year is this Kenmore dishwasher Model # 665.15831791 made?

The date of manufacture is determined by the SERIAL NUMBER on the appliance. This dishwasher was manufactured by Whirlpool. The following link explains how to determine when it was manufactured:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3576437-determining_the_age_of_your_whirlpool_ap

The serial number is usually located somewhere around the door opening. The first two numbers in the serial number identify the WEEK it was manufactured (52 weeks in a year). The second DIGIT in the serial represents the YEAR it was manufactured.

If you have difficulty determining the manufacture date, please post back with your serial number and I will assist you. I hope you find this information helpful.

Our Kenmore Dishwasher caught fire.

You may want to contact Sears to see if there was a recall on your model dishwasher. There were problems with the door assemblies on some model dishwashers that were caused by the rinse agent leaking into the wire harness of the door. Over time the rinse agent would corrode the wire insulation causing the units to catch fire in some cases. The fix was a free inner door and wiring harness upgrade kit from the manufacturer. Here is a link you can refer to that may offer some assistance:

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml07/07190.html

Although I did not see your model number listed, you may want to call the Consumer Product Safety Commission number listed at the bottom of the page and report this incident.

I hope this offers some assistance to you.
