I'm looking to spend approximately between $150 and $250 on computer
speakers and
have been trying to find reviews of them, but there certainly aren't
many. If you have speakers that you are satisfied or unsatisfied with,
can you please post your opinions here, or email me. So far the only two
that I have found great things about are the Yamaha YST-SS1010 and the
Audio-Technica MMS557. Thanks for any info.

,4 inch midrange and something like two 4inch drivers in a bass module. My
buddy bought them at Costco for $189 and I was stunned at the sound quality.
They are self amplified also.

So, what's wrong with stopping there? :)

to my SB16 and they sound just fine. They have built in amps so you don't
need anything else.

Lemme get this straight. You're suggesting that he go buy
audiophile-quality speakers and run them off the amp on the soundcard?
No. Bad idea. The amps on soundcards pretty uniformly produce output
with _lots_ of noise and distortion. Given the amount of money he wants
to spend, good computer speakers are a reasonable choice, if for no other
reason than the fact that they have built-in amps so you can run off the
(generally much cleaner) preamp output from the soundcard. Someone else
recommended the AR 570 speakers. Nice speakers, assuming you have the
desk space for them. If you don't, I recommend the Altec Lansing ACS
300.1 sub/sat setup. I'm currently running the ACS 300 setup (the 300.1
is an update that fixes some problems with distortion at higher volumes)
and find it to deliver clean, full sound (but then, I rarely turn it up
above about 4). I haven't heard them myself, but I'm told the Cambridge
Soundworks speakers are deficient in the midrange.
Hooking up the souncard to the stereo can be a good idea...as long as you
don't mind your sound coming from somewhere other than right in front of
you (which can be a problem if you're playing games) and have properly
surge-protected your stereo to the same level as your computer system.
All here IMHO, YMMV.
