First off, have you tried playing Blu-Ray movies/games instead of DVD's? If you have and only the DVD's work then it sounds like the "blu ray" part of the drive has died. In the PS3 blu ray drive there is a lens for blu ray movies/games and a seperate one for dvd/cd's. Sounds like the blu ray lens one broke. The cost for repair of this $150 dollars if not under warranty. Now before calling sony try this.
Update your firmware (if you aren't running the latest already). Yup, this overwrites some of system software that may have been corrupted.
First, back up your game saves, and any music you have on your HDD. Format the PS3! Yup, again this fixes corrupted files on the HDD by forcing the PS3 to rewrite them.
Buy a Blu-Ray cleaner and try it.
Sadly if these don't work, you will need to give Sony a call, and have that coffin mailed your way.
The optic lens assemblies are completely different, so to answer your question unfourtenatly no it won't work. On the good side check this site for parts, and if you don't see the one that goes in your machine I have other sites I get parts from just let me know.
You might not actually need to spend any money on a PS3 repair guide at all- instead you will need to purchase a new Blu Ray drive (or laser lens itself and simply replace the lens) But even before you do that try the following things:
Clean your game disks
Clean your Blu Ray drive (get one of those laser lens cleaning kits on eBay or Amazon)
If that doesn't work then I've got a free step-by-step PS3 repair guide that will show you with video and text instructions how to replace the Blu-Ray drive yourself. Its all online so you don't need to download anything either
hi im silver surfer, i work in a ps3 repair center and have a little bad new's for you all that own ps3 consoles.you can NOT just take out a bd drive "blue ray drive" and put it in another console or put a new bd drive in a console. IT WONT WORK... the drive has to be programed to your ps3.and to do this your ps3 has to be put into factory mode to program it,this equipment you need to do this is very hard to come by,
