There is a good chance, if the defrost timer is mechanical, that you can rotate (nudge) the timer to see if it get's going.

Most commercial refrigeration does not use a defrost thermostat, and a lot of it does not use a heater (they use a hot gas bypass valve and pump hot gas through the evaporator, rather than through the condensor.).

Let me know if you need further help.

There is a light in my freezer. but, it doesn't get cold

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You are locked into the defrost mode. This is where every 8-10 hours your unit will completely shut down except for the lights. At this time your defrost heater turns on for 20-30 minutes to defrost the evaporator (Cooling) coils in your freezer.

You can manually turn your unit back on, until you get a new defrost timer. If you have a up right freezer your defrost timer is in the lower back. It is mounted on a metal plate.

With a flat head screw driver turn the stem slowly one click at a time until your unit turns on. Once a day repeat this process to put your unit back into defrost until the timer is replaced.

If you have a top freezer the defrost timer is located on the top of the fresh food section on the left. Do the same thing. The cost of the timer is about $30.00.

Send me your model number located on the side front wall of your fresh food section and I will proved you with the part number and walk you through the repair.

I noticed ice build-up on the evaporator and I have to manually defrost using a hair dryer. Seems to me that there is something wrong with the automatic defrost or temperature sensor on the evap. Any

There are a few different problems you could be having on the defrost cycle. First you will have to check defrost thermostat and heater. Unplug connectors from both ends of element and ohm, if it doesn't read through it is bad. Then ohm defrost thermostat, it has to be cold "below 40" to have a closed circuit so that it will read through. The best way to check it is when it is covered in ice. If it reads through when below 40 degrees it is good. After that it will be to the defrost timer or if it has power board. If there are no wiring problems it will be board or defrost timer. Thanks Logan.

Freezer side not freezing

Check for ice / frosting inside the freezer .... If present you probably have a defrost problem.... This causes the freezer coil to ice up and block the air flow ... the causes could be a bad defrost heater , defrost timer, defrost sensors, or control board. Also make sure that the condenser coil is clean. remove ALL dust with a vacuum and a coil brush .the coil is located either on the bottom or on the back side of the unit... You didn't give the Make and model #

Ice build up In GE Tnx22brcalbb stops fan from circulating air.I can remove the ice and freezer will work for several days but ice builds up again.

there is a problem with your defrost circuit.you also need to check for any bad spots in your seal that maybe letting air in the freezer causing excessive ice build up.but you need to check your defrost sensor

Where is the Adaptive Defrost Board on a Frigidaire GLHS36EEQ6?

The board is located under the freezer side of the unit. You can call Sears, as they carry your brand's parts and they will tell you exactly where it is. There are diagrams on the web too. Search for appliance parts. You'll need to enter model number here: www3.sears.com

Power on but fridge/freezer not working (only lights)

Yes, boards may need replacing, but not at the expense of the door, apparantly your "engineer" would rather work on older models that may require a hammer. Best advice would be given knowing the make and model number of your unit. A professional should be able to diagnose the board processes as well as the compressor in a short amount of time. Check the defrost heater (after pwr is restored to unit) for the freezer side (placement depending upon model) for continuity (basically a heating element for the evaporator coils - which will freeze without defrost). Proper defrost will help lessen the load on the compressor. Check the overload relay on the compressor itself for failure and replacement of relay. Have the unit defrosted, svc defrost htr, thermostats/thermolinks , compressor, before checking computer board operations.

Upright freezer

Three things could be the problem. Most likely would be the defrost thermostat which clips onto the evaporator behind the panel in the freezer. 2nd would be the timer or control board (will have one or the other). 3rd would be a bad defrost heater. Alot of times the def. therm. will show obvious sign of being bad by the cap on top popped open. You can check resistance on the heater. Any resistance at all on the heater means it is good. If it has a standard timer turn it clockwise until it clicks. This is putting it into defrost. If the heater comes on the timer is bad. If it has a control board you would unplug the unit then unplug the power supply to the board and jump line 1 to the wire going to the heater. While unplugged from the board and jumped, plug the freezer back in. If the heater comes on then the board is bad. If you are not sure how to test replace the def. thermostat, which is the cheapest part and see what happens. Note: When conducting the test for the timer or board the def. therm. must be freezing so don't defrost first! Hope this helps.
